StepSocietyHTX Turns One: Cypress Area Women’s Walking Community Celebrates a Year of Connection

West Houston / Cypress  /  West Houston / Cypress
August 18 2026

A year ago, StepSocietyHTX started with a straightforward idea: give women a place to walk, meet new people and spend time together.

Since then, the Houston-area group has grown into a regular community centered around weekly walks, occasional sunset meetups, monthly social events, volunteer opportunities and other gatherings designed to help women connect in a relaxed setting.

Now, StepSocietyHTX is getting ready to celebrate its first anniversary.

The group was founded by Ondriea Johnson, a Katy-area resident originally from Austin and a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. What began as a walking group has gradually expanded into something that gives participants several ways to get involved, whether they come for exercise, conversation or simply the chance to meet other women in the area.

Walking at Your Own Pace

One of the more approachable parts of StepSocietyHTX is that the walks are not built around speed or competition.

The group uses front, middle and back “Pace Queens” so walkers can move at a comfortable pace without worrying about being left behind. Children are welcome, and dogs can come along as well.

For someone who has thought about joining a walking group but felt unsure about showing up alone or keeping up with everyone else, that setup can make the experience feel a little less intimidating.

Participants are also not required to be photographed or appear in videos, something the group makes clear in its frequently asked questions.

The weekly walks remain at the center of StepSocietyHTX, but they are only part of the schedule.

More Than Saturday Walks

StepSocietyHTX also hosts one social gathering each month, known as a Society Social, along with occasional pop-up walks and other activities.

The group’s August calendar, for example, includes weekly walks, sunset walks, a karaoke night, volunteering with Kids’ Meals and a Society Social.

That mix gives members a chance to get to know one another outside of the usual walking route.

For some participants, the draw may be staying active. For others, it may simply be having a recurring reason to get out of the house, meet someone new or spend time with people who share similar interests.

Either way, the group’s first year has been built around showing up consistently and creating opportunities for those connections to happen naturally.

StepSocietyHTX Anniversary Walk Party Bash Set for September 5

To mark its first anniversary, StepSocietyHTX will host a Walk Party Bash on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Deputy Darren Goforth Park on Horsepen Creek in the Cypress area.

The celebration will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the dog park side of the park at 9402 Barker Cypress Road.

Participants are being asked to wear pink for the anniversary walk.

The event is open to women who have been involved throughout the year as well as those who may be joining for the first time.

One Year In, the Group Keeps Walking

A walking group may sound simple, and in many ways, that is part of the appeal.

There is no complicated format. People show up, walk together and talk along the way. Over time, those regular meetups can lead to familiar faces, new friendships and a greater sense of connection to the people around you.

For StepSocietyHTX, the one-year milestone is a chance to look back at the walks, social events and collaborations that filled its first 12 months while preparing for another year ahead.
