For Copperfield-area families who have driven past the former Joann Fabrics on FM 529 and wondered what might come next, there is now an answer — at least for Halloween season.

Spirit Halloween is preparing to open a seasonal store at 15520 FM 529, Houston, TX 77095, in Copperfield Crossing, taking over the space previously occupied by Joann. Spirit Halloween’s website lists the Copperfield location as “coming August,” although a specific opening date has not been announced.

For residents across Copperfield, Hearthstone, The Colonies and surrounding northwest Houston neighborhoods, the arrival means one of the country’s best-known Halloween retailers will be much closer to home just as families begin planning costumes, parties, school events and front-yard displays.

It also puts activity back into a storefront that went dark after Joann’s nationwide liquidation in 2025.

Former Joann Store Gets a Seasonal Second Act

The Copperfield Crossing space has been familiar to local shoppers for years.

Joann operated at 15520 FM 529 before the fabric and craft retailer entered its final bankruptcy proceedings in 2025. The Copperfield store was among the Houston-area locations affected as Joann first announced widespread closures and then moved toward shutting down the entire chain. The FM 529 location ultimately closed during the company’s liquidation.

At the time, Joann said its assets had been sold following a court-supervised process.

“Following a comprehensive sale process and auction, GA Group together with the Prepetition Term Loan Agent has been selected as the winning bidder to acquire substantially all of Joann’s assets. In connection with this agreement, subject to Bankruptcy Court approval of the transaction, the winning bidders plan to begin winding down the company's operations and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all store locations.”

For longtime Copperfield crafters, the closure meant losing a neighborhood source for fabric, sewing supplies, seasonal crafts and décor. Spirit Halloween will not replace that year-round use, but its arrival will put the vacant retail space back into operation for one of the busiest seasonal shopping periods of the year.

Joann leadership also acknowledged the communities and employees affected as the chain wound down, saying, “Joann leadership, our Board, advisors, and legal partners made every possible effort to pursue a more favorable outcome that would keep the company in business. We deeply appreciate our dedicated Team Members, our customers, and communities across the nation for their unwavering support for more than 80 years.”

What Copperfield Shoppers Can Expect at Spirit Halloween

Spirit Halloween is North America’s largest Halloween retailer, operating a seasonal pop-up model that turns vacant spaces in shopping centers and malls into temporary Halloween destinations each year. The company says it operates more than 1,450 seasonal locations across North America, while its online store remains open throughout the year.

Spirit traces its history to 1983, and its annual store openings have become something of an unofficial signal that Halloween season is getting underway.

The Spirit Halloween Copperfield Crossing store is expected to carry costumes and accessories for infants and toddlers, children, tweens, teens and adults, along with pet costumes and coordinated options for couples and groups.

Shoppers can typically find officially licensed costumes and merchandise connected to movies, television, video games, superheroes, Disney characters, horror franchises and current pop-culture trends. Among the brands and characters Spirit promotes are Avengers, DC Comics, Spider-Man, Superman, Supergirl, Moana, Toy Story, Descendants, Ghost Face and Terrifier.

But costumes are only part of what has made Spirit Halloween stores destinations in their own right.

Animatronics and Halloween Décor Are Part of the Experience

Anyone who has walked into a Spirit Halloween with children — or with an adult who takes Halloween decorating very seriously — knows the animatronics tend to attract attention first.

Spirit stores are designed as more than traditional costume shops, with large animated Halloween characters, sound effects, lighting and themed displays woven throughout the shopping experience.

The Copperfield store is expected to carry Spirit’s extensive selection of Halloween decorations, including oversized animatronics, fog machines, outdoor lighting, hanging props, wall decorations, tabletop pieces, pumpkin décor, artificial spider webs, tombstones and decorative fencing.

That gives nearby homeowners another local option whether the goal is a few pumpkins by the front door or the kind of elaborate haunted-yard setup that becomes a neighborhood destination on Halloween night.

For families planning Halloween parties, trunk-or-treat events, school celebrations or traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating, the location also offers the convenience of shopping along the FM 529 corridor rather than traveling farther across the Houston area.

Spirit organizes its stores by costume type, theme, product category and license, with staff available to help shoppers find costumes, accessories, makeup and décor.

Spirit Halloween Has Grown Alongside America’s Halloween Tradition

Part of Spirit Halloween’s unusual success comes from a business model built around temporary retail space.

Rather than maintaining every storefront throughout the year, the company opens seasonal stores in shopping centers and malls as Halloween approaches. Locations can begin appearing as early as July, then operate through the Halloween season before closing again.

That strategy has made the unmistakable Spirit Halloween banner a familiar sight in former department stores, craft stores and other temporarily vacant retail spaces across the country.

For Copperfield, that means the former Joann building will look very different this fall.

The fabric bolts, yarn and craft supplies that once filled the store will give way to masks, costumes, fog machines, skeletons and towering animated characters.

Spirit of Children Adds a Charitable Side to the Seasonal Business

Behind the playful scares is also a longtime charitable program.

Since 2006, Spirit of Children, Spirit Halloween’s philanthropic initiative, has raised funds benefiting Child Life Departments at more than 160 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada.

Child Life programs help children and families cope with hospitalization and medical treatment through developmentally appropriate support, education and activities. Spirit Halloween customers can contribute to the program through participating stores and online donations.

What Happens Next for Spirit Halloween in Copperfield?

For now, the biggest unanswered question is the exact opening day.

Spirit Halloween lists its Copperfield Crossing location at 15520 FM 529 in Houston as “coming August.” Residents looking for the opening date, operating hours or local inventory will want to watch Spirit Halloween’s store information as the location gets closer to opening.

The timing puts the store in place well before October 31, giving families several weeks to shop for Halloween costumes, decorations and party supplies.

And for anyone who has noticed the empty former Joann while traveling FM 529, the transformation should soon become hard to miss.

For a shopping center that lost a longtime retailer in 2025, it is a temporary change — Spirit Halloween stores are seasonal by design — but it will bring new foot traffic and a distinctly different kind of activity back to the Copperfield storefront.

For local families, it may also make one of the season’s most familiar errands a little easier: finding that last-minute costume, one more bag of spider webs or the animatronic someone in the household insists the front yard absolutely needs.
