Speedway Park to Open in Elyson This Fall, Bringing Scooter Track and Kid-Friendly Play Zones to Katy Families
Elyson is racing ahead with a playful new addition to its growing list of family-friendly amenities. This fall, the master-planned community in Katy will unveil Speedway Park, a one-of-a-kind destination designed especially for young children with scooters, hoverboards, or just plenty of energy to burn.
Anchored by a 400-foot circular racetrack with vibrant colors, “start” and “finish” lines, and distance markers, Speedway Park will offer a unique outlet for Elyson’s youngest residents—particularly those between the ages of 2 and 7. The park promises to be more than just a loop for laps. Interwoven throughout the design are play zones with swing sets, slides, climbing mounds, and grassy areas perfect for kicking a ball or gazing at the clouds.
“With our third onsite Katy ISD elementary opening in August, Elyson has an ever-growing number of families with young children,” said Heather Gustafson, marketing director for Brookfield Residential, Elyson’s developer. “We wanted Speedway Park to be a place where kids of all ages would be very excited to enjoy their free time.”

Located just west of Katy-Hockley Cut-Off Road and adjacent to Elyson’s newest elementary school, Speedway Park adds to a suite of recreational amenities already popular with families in the area—including Elyson House, Elyson Commons, and Kaleidoscope Park. But this park brings something new: a whimsical and mobility-focused design, aimed squarely at younger kids and their growing love for movement.
“This is an age group with lots of energy, and Speedway Park will be an active park where they can let their imaginations run wild and burn off lots of energy,” said Andrew Gressett, an associate designer with SWA Houston, which designed the park.

To keep families cool and safe under the Texas sun, the track will feature a rubberized surface to help soften any tumbles and reduce surface heat. Elyson’s signature color palette of vivid earth and sky tones will be seen in the track, play structures, and shade canopies. Several sycamore trees will provide natural shade, while landscaping will include native pollinator perennials and ornamental grasses like Gulf Coast Muhly—known for its flowing stems and dramatic pink blooms in the fall.
“Getting vertical is thrilling to kids, especially in a city as flat as Houston,” Gressett said. “Even climbing just a few feet off the ground can give a child an exciting new perspective.”
Beyond the track and play areas, the park will include an open green lawn ideal for flying kites, playing soccer, or simply enjoying a lazy afternoon. A shaded pavilion and seating area will offer parents a comfortable spot to relax while keeping an eye on their children.

The park’s layout encourages exploration. As children scoot along the loop, they’ll encounter interconnected zones—including rubbery stepping stones and themed adventures that invite them to hop off and play. Designed to celebrate movement, imagination, and nature, Speedway Park is set to become a popular destination in Elyson for years to come.
