San Antonio's 'Lady Eco' Marks 20 Years of Keeping the River Walk Clean, Removing More Than 4.3 Million Pounds of Debris
For millions of visitors each year, the San Antonio River Walk is known for its scenic waterways, restaurants, shops and unmistakable charm. What many people don't see is the daily work happening behind the scenes to keep the city's most recognizable destination clean, healthy and welcoming.
This year, the City of San Antonio is celebrating an important milestone as Lady Eco, the custom-built ecology sweeper barge responsible for cleaning the downtown River Walk, marks its 20th anniversary. Since entering service in 2006, the specialized vessel has removed more than 4.3 million pounds of floating debris, helping preserve both the beauty of the River Walk and the health of its urban ecosystem.
Two Decades of Protecting the San Antonio River Walk
Funded through the support of former San Antonio Mayor Lila Cockrell and the San Antonio Parks Foundation, Lady Eco was designed specifically for the unique conditions of the city's historic downtown River Walk.
Unlike conventional maintenance equipment, the vessel was custom engineered to navigate the River Walk's narrow, winding 3.2-mile downtown loop while minimizing its environmental impact.
Every day, Lady Eco travels the river collecting litter, leaves, branches and other floating debris before it can accumulate. The work becomes especially important after heavy rainfall, when stormwater often carries additional debris into the waterway.
Working alongside the City's River Operations team, Lady Eco helps ensure residents and visitors experience a clean, attractive River Walk throughout the year.
Built Specifically for the River Walk
Lady Eco combines specialized engineering with environmentally friendly technology to perform its daily work without compromising water quality.
Among its unique features are:
- A custom design built specifically for the River Walk's narrow channels
- Clean operation powered by compressed natural gas and compressed air to reduce the risk of contaminating the river
- A 35-foot sweeping wingspan equipped with 12 mesh collection nets
- Dual pneumatic arms featuring six nets on each side that sweep approximately one foot below the water's surface across a 35-foot span
- The ability to remove approximately 115 tons of floating debris every year
The combination allows River Operations crews to efficiently collect both natural debris and litter while protecting aquatic habitats along the downtown waterway.
A Behind-the-Scenes Role That Benefits the Entire Community
Although Lady Eco rarely becomes the center of attention, its impact reaches far beyond routine maintenance.
A clean River Walk supports San Antonio's tourism economy, enhances the experience for residents enjoying downtown events, and helps protect one of the city's most treasured public spaces. By removing debris before it accumulates, the vessel also contributes to maintaining water quality and preserving the river as a thriving urban ecosystem.
As San Antonio continues welcoming millions of visitors annually, the ongoing work of Lady Eco remains an essential part of preserving the River Walk's reputation as one of Texas' premier destinations.
What Residents and Visitors Should Know
Whether visiting for the first time or enjoying a weekend downtown, residents can take simple steps to help keep the River Walk clean by properly disposing of trash, recycling when possible, and helping prevent litter from entering storm drains that feed into the river.
The City of San Antonio also encourages visitors to review the Downtown San Antonio Know Before You Go resources and parking information before planning a trip downtown.
Twenty years after first entering service, Lady Eco continues to demonstrate how thoughtful investment in environmental stewardship can protect one of San Antonio's greatest community assets for future generations.
