San Antonio Public Library Launches Free Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending Program to Expand Internet Access Across Underserved Communities
For many families, a reliable internet connection is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity for schoolwork, job applications, telehealth appointments and everyday life. Recognizing that thousands of residents still face barriers to broadband access, the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) is introducing a new pilot program designed to help close that gap.
Beginning this summer, SAPL is making 1,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots available for checkout at 10 library branches located in areas where broadband access has historically been limited. The initiative aims to improve digital equity by giving residents the ability to connect online wherever they need it, whether at home, while traveling or in another location without dependable internet service.
$200,000 Grant Supports Digital Equity Initiative
The pilot program is funded through a $200,000 grant from Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc. The investment will help expand internet access for residents who may otherwise struggle to connect to educational resources, workforce development opportunities, healthcare services and other essential online tools.
Library Director Sukrit Goswami said the program is focused on removing barriers for communities that need reliable internet access the most.
"These devices will help reduce barriers in some of our most underserved communities," said Library Director Sukrit Goswami. "Our pilot program empowers residents without broadband access to get online for crucial tasks such as studying for an upcoming test, making healthcare appointments, applying for jobs, and much more. Providing these devices in areas where we know there is a need bridges the digital divide by giving residents reliable internet access at home, on the go or anywhere they need it."
Hotspots Available at 10 San Antonio Library Branches
Residents with a valid San Antonio Public Library card can check out a hotspot for 21 days from the following library locations:
- Bazan Branch Library
- Collins Garden Branch Library
- Cortez Branch Library
- Forest Hills Branch Library
- Las Palmas Branch Library
- Memorial Branch Library
- Mission Branch Library
- Pan American Branch Library
- Schaefer Branch Library
- Westfall Branch Library
While the devices cannot be reserved in advance, library patrons may join a waitlist if all hotspots at a particular branch have already been checked out.
Addressing a Longstanding Community Need
The new lending program builds on findings from a City of San Antonio broadband study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. That assessment identified portions of the city's East, West and South sides as areas with limited access to high-speed internet, highlighting a digital divide that continues to affect students, job seekers, families and older adults.
By placing hotspot lending stations in neighborhoods identified through that research, SAPL hopes to provide a practical solution that helps residents stay connected for work, school and daily life.
More Ways to Stay Connected at the Library
In addition to the new hotspot lending program, the San Antonio Public Library continues to offer several free internet access options throughout its system.
Visitors can use public desktop and laptop computers inside library branches, while free Wi-Fi is available both indoors and in designated outdoor areas. Outdoor Wi-Fi service operates daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., allowing residents to connect to the SAPLWiFi network from marked parking spaces and select public areas.
What Residents Should Know
The new Wi-Fi hotspot lending program offers another way for San Antonio families to stay connected in an increasingly digital world. Whether completing homework, attending a virtual medical appointment, searching for employment or accessing government services, dependable internet access can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
