First Day Hikes Set New Records in Texas: Explore These Must-Visit State Parks Near Austin and San Antonio
Texas State Parks have once again proven that when it comes to connecting communities with the outdoors, everything really is bigger in Texas.
For the fourth consecutive year, the statewide First Day Hikes initiative set new records in participation, with 86 state park sites hosting 181 events that welcomed 12,835 hikers on over 28,000 miles of trails. These numbers mark the largest turnout in Texas and across the country, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).
“Texas led the nation once again in First Day Hike participation,” said Rodney Franklin, Director of Texas State Parks. “We had wonderful weather, and it was a great way to spend time with family in the outdoors at one of your Texas State Parks. So many Texans have made this event an annual tradition.”
While Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose and Palo Duro Canyon State Park topped the list in participation, the energy of the First Day Hikes movement is being felt far beyond — including right here in Greater Austin and San Antonio, where locals are embracing their nearby parks more than ever before.
Why the Buzz Around First Day Hikes?
Started as a national movement to promote healthy, active lifestyles and appreciation for public lands, First Day Hikes in Texas have grown to become a cherished annual tradition. Events include everything from self-guided nature walks and bike rides to ranger-led history tours and even paddling trips.
Importantly, the hikes cater to all skill levels — from young families to seasoned trekkers — and offer an opportunity to start the new year with community, mindfulness, and movement.
Participation in 2026 soared by over 3,000 hikers compared to the previous year, and Texas now holds the top spot nationally for First Day Hike events and attendees.
