Another familiar retailer is making plans for the Potranco Road area.

A new Dollar Tree is slated for 14925 Potranco Road, not far from Luckey Ranch, according to a construction filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Plans call for an 11,010-square-foot store built from the ground up, with an estimated construction cost of $2.31 million. Work is currently expected to begin April 1, 2027, and wrap up around June 15, 2027.

That June date is the projected end of construction, not necessarily the day shoppers will be able to walk through the doors. Dollar Tree has not announced an opening date for the store.

Another Shopping Option Along Potranco Road

For residents of Luckey Ranch and nearby neighborhoods, the new store could be especially handy for the kinds of quick trips Dollar Tree is known for.

The retailer carries everything from cleaning supplies, paper products and pantry staples to greeting cards, party decorations, school supplies, seasonal décor, toys and craft items. Many stores also stock frozen and refrigerated food.

While Dollar Tree was once known almost entirely for merchandise priced at $1, the chain has changed considerably in recent years. Its stores still feature plenty of lower-priced items, but shoppers can now find products at several price points.

The Potranco Road store would join an already sizable Dollar Tree presence in San Antonio. The company currently lists dozens of stores across the city, including other locations along Potranco Road.

Dollar Tree Started With Just Five Stores

Dollar Tree’s beginnings go back much further than the green signs now found in shopping centers across the country.

Its roots trace to a Virginia variety store opened by K.R. Perry in 1953. Decades later, Macon Brock, Doug Perry and Ray Compton launched a five-store discount concept called Only $1.00 in 1986.

The business became Dollar Tree in 1994 and went public the following year.

Today, Dollar Tree operates thousands of stores across the United States and Canada, making it one of the largest discount retailers in North America.

Part of the chain’s appeal has always been the mix. A shopper stopping in for aluminum foil or toothpaste might also find seasonal decorations, snacks, gift bags, storage containers or something for a last-minute school project.

That makes the planned store the kind of addition residents may notice less as a major destination and more as a convenient place to have nearby.

Potranco Road Keeps Adding New Retail

The new Dollar Tree is also one more sign of how quickly the Potranco Road corridor continues to change.

As neighborhoods have grown farther west, more stores, restaurants and services have followed, filling in stretches that looked very different only a few years ago.

For Luckey Ranch residents, the Dollar Tree project means another everyday shopping choice could soon be added to that mix.

Construction is still months away, and plans and timelines can change before a project is completed.
