More Than $15 Million Awarded for FM 2001 Improvements in Hays County
Drivers who regularly travel FM 2001 know how quickly eastern Hays County has changed. More homes and daily traffic have placed increasing demands on roads that were built for a much smaller population, and a new round of transportation funding is moving several planned improvements closer to reality.
Hays County announced Sept. 22 that it has received $15,237,235 in Surface Transportation Block Grant funding through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization for projects along FM 2001. The three awards support projects valued at approximately $24.5 million.
Where the Money Is Going
The largest award is $12,814,451 for the FM 2001 East Interim project in Precinct 1, which has an estimated total cost of $21.5 million. The project runs from Graef Road to southeast of SH 21 and calls for a new FM 2001 alignment with one travel lane in each direction, a median, shoulders and intersection turn lanes.
That project previously received approximately $5.8 million in CAMPO construction funding in 2021. The latest awards will also support final design work on improvements being developed in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation.
For residents, the significance goes beyond the dollar amount. FM 2001 is part of a transportation network serving the fast-growing Kyle and Buda area, where new subdivisions and development continue to change everyday travel patterns.
Planning Roads for Continued Growth
The county describes the work as part of a broader effort to improve safety and mobility. Transportation projects of this scale typically move through multiple phases, including design, right-of-way work, utility coordination and construction, meaning the funding announcement is an important step rather than an indication that every improvement will appear immediately.
FM 2001 is also among the roadways being discussed during Hays County's upcoming East Kyle Projects Open House on Oct. 1, giving residents another opportunity to see plans and ask questions about transportation improvements in the area.
