Mission Bend Branch Library to Host Free College-Preparedness Programs This Fall

Mission Bend Branch Library to Host Free College-Preparedness Programs This Fall

September 04 2025

For families in Lakemont, preparing for college can feel overwhelming. From navigating admissions requirements to filling out financial aid forms, the process is often complicated and stressful. This fall, Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mission Bend Branch Library is stepping in to help with a four-part workshop series, S.T.E.P. Into College, designed to guide students and parents through every stage of the journey.

The series begins on Saturday, September 13, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. with “Start Strong: Preparing to Apply,” held in the library’s Computer Lab at 8421 Addicks Clodine Rd, Houston, TX 77083. William Keaton, Director of College Readiness at Yes Prep Public Schools, will share insight into how colleges make admission decisions and offer practical tips for completing applications.

Future sessions will continue throughout the fall, each focusing on a key step of the process:

  • October 25: Tackle Financial Aid: Applying for Financial Aid

  • November 15: Engage After Applying

  • December 13: Plan for What’s Next

Why Programs Like This Matter

Getting help with the admissions and financial aid process can open doors for students who might otherwise feel stuck. In fact, data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that high school graduates who completed the FAFSA were much more likely to start college right after graduation—nearly double the rate of those who didn’t. While filling out forms isn’t the only factor, it’s a strong reminder that the right guidance at the right time can make all the difference in helping students take that next big step.

Workshops like those offered at Mission Bend Library address these gaps by providing free, accessible resources close to home. For many local families, especially first-generation college applicants, this support can make all the difference.

A Community Resource for Students and Families

The library encourages college-bound students, parents, and even adults returning to school after a break to take advantage of the free workshops. Beyond admissions and financial aid, the sessions will also help families think through alternatives, explore realistic timelines, and create achievable college or career plans.

Seating is limited, and registration is required. To sign up, visit the library’s website at fortbendlibraries.gov, call 832-471-5900, or stop by the Adult Reference desk at Mission Bend Branch Library.

For the Mission Bend community, S.T.E.P. Into College is more than just a series of workshops—it’s an opportunity to ease the stress of college planning and empower the next generation of students to reach their goals.
