Matzke Elementary School Counselors Receive Prestigious CREST Award for Excellence in Student Counseling

January 09 2025

Matzke Elementary School counselors Dr. Janis Roberson and Elizabeth Ross were recently honored with the 2024 Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) award. This prestigious recognition, sponsored by the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA), is awarded to schools that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives and academic achievements of students through comprehensive counseling services.

The CREST award is given to school counseling programs that adhere to the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling, which is focused on improving students' academic, career, and personal/social development. The award underscores the effectiveness of counseling programs that support students’ overall well-being and success.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of a counseling team that earned the CREST award,” said Elizabeth Ross, Matzke Elementary’s counselor. “I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to serve the CFISD community, and to be recognized for the programs and work we do is truly humbling. We are truly blessed to get to provide our counseling program to the students, staff, and families of Matzke Elementary.”

To qualify for the CREST award, counselors submit detailed applications outlining their counseling programs' design and implementation. The applications are rigorously evaluated by a TSCA CREST evaluation team and scored based on a comprehensive rubric that includes the effectiveness of the program’s impact on student achievement.

“I feel both honored and blessed to receive this award, not only for our campus but for the entire district,” said Dr. Janis Roberson, the other Matzke Elementary counselor. “There are so many other counselors in CFISD who have awesome administrators, staff, and community partners who know the importance of school counselors and support what we do. This award celebrates all of us!”

The CREST award winners will officially receive their recognition and banner during the TSCA Annual Conference, scheduled for February 2, 2025, at the Galveston Convention Center. In addition to the award ceremony, Dr. Roberson will also present at the conference on February 4, sharing her insights into the effective practices that led to Matzke’s success.
