Lone Star College Leadership High School Program Opens Free 2026-2027 Applications for Houston-Area Students

For Houston-area students beginning to think seriously about college, careers and their place in the community, leadership can feel like something reserved for adults with impressive titles. Lone Star College System’s Leadership High School program is designed to challenge that idea.

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 Leadership High School program, a tuition-free opportunity that helps public high school sophomores and juniors build confidence, strengthen workplace skills and connect with professionals across the Lone Star College System service area.

The application deadline is Sept. 17, 2026. Eligible students must attend a public high school within the LSCS service area, and participation is completely free.

A Free Leadership Program for Houston-Area High School Students

Since the program began, Leadership High School has graduated more than 2,000 students from 11 independent school districts served by Lone Star College System.

The experience goes beyond traditional classroom instruction. Students participate in interactive workshops, leadership simulations, team challenges, career exploration activities and conversations with local business, civic and community leaders.

Those experiences are intended to help students improve communication, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills while learning more about possible college and career pathways.

“Leadership begins long before someone earns a title,” said Kay Fitzsimons, LSCS executive director, Leadership and Economic Development. “This program encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, discover their strengths and recognize the influence they can have on the people and communities around them.”

For families searching for free leadership programs for high school students in Houston, college readiness opportunities or career exploration programs near them, Leadership High School offers a structured way for teenagers to gain practical experience before graduation.

Students Build Confidence Through Real-World Experiences

The 2026-2027 program begins with an orientation in October. Students then attend monthly experiential learning sessions focused on leadership development, workforce readiness, civic engagement and community service.

Participants also work together on collaborative projects, giving them opportunities to practice making decisions, solving problems and communicating with peers.

The program’s focus on teamwork and service can be especially valuable for students who are still discovering their strengths or who may not yet see themselves as leaders. By interacting with community and industry professionals, students can begin building networks while gaining a clearer understanding of the expectations they may encounter in college and the workplace.

“Our goal is for every student to leave the program with greater confidence in themselves and a deeper understanding of how collaboration, service and integrity can shape both their future and the future of their communities,” Fitzsimons said.

Leadership High School Program Highlights

The program includes interactive leadership experiences, college and career readiness activities, team-building exercises, collaborative problem solving, community service, civic engagement and networking with business and community leaders.

Together, those experiences are intended to help students become more comfortable sharing ideas, working with others and taking initiative. They can also help young people understand how leadership decisions affect schools, workplaces and neighborhoods.

For parents, the program offers a no-cost way to supplement what students are already learning in school. For students, it provides a chance to explore future careers, meet professionals and develop skills that can support scholarship applications, college admissions, internships and future employment.

How to Apply for the 2026-2027 Program

Applications will be accepted through Sept. 17, 2026. Students must be public high school sophomores or juniors attending school within the Lone Star College System service area.

Students and parents can review eligibility requirements and submit an application at LoneStar.edu/Leadership-HighSchool.

Because the program is free, it may offer an accessible option for families seeking student leadership development, college preparation and workforce readiness opportunities without the cost of a private camp or enrichment program.

Supporting the Houston Region’s Future Workforce

Lone Star College System enrolls more than 90,000 students each semester and provides academic transfer programs, career training and workforce education throughout the Houston area.

The system includes eight colleges, six centers, eight Workforce Centers of Excellence and Lone Star Corporate College. Mario K. Castillo, J.D., serves as chancellor of LSCS, which is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area and was named a 2025 Great Colleges to Work For institution by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Through programs such as Leadership High School, LSCS is working to introduce younger students to the skills, relationships and responsibilities that can shape their academic and professional futures.

For the students who participate, the experience may begin with a monthly workshop or team challenge. Its longer-term value, however, could be the confidence to speak up, serve others and recognize that leadership can begin well before graduation.
