Lamar CISD Art Students Shine at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Show Submission Day

January 22 2025

Lamar CISD art students delivered an outstanding performance at this year’s Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo™ Art Show Submission Day. Of the 44 submissions from across the district, 32 students were named finalists, 8 received Special Merits, 4 earned Gold Medals, and 3 achieved Best of Show awards. The results highlight the creativity and dedication of students participating in one of Texas's most celebrated art programs.

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo School Art Program has provided opportunities for student artists for more than 50 years. Open to students from Pre-K through 12th grade, the program focuses on promoting awareness of agriculture, Western heritage, and the Western lifestyle through artistic expression. It supports approximately 130 school districts, as well as private and parochial schools, and receives thousands of entries each year.

Students participating in the program must follow specific rules and guidelines. Artwork must reflect Western Art themes, such as the heritage, lifestyle, or landscapes of the American West, and be created under the supervision of a teacher within the current school year. Entries must also meet restrictions on materials, methods, and subject matter to qualify for judging.

The program offers students more than just the chance to compete. Participants can earn scholarships, attend summer workshops, and have their work displayed in the Hayloft Gallery during the Rodeo. Schools with strong involvement also have the opportunity to receive the prestigious Super Show award.

Community members can view the exceptional artwork created by Lamar CISD students at an upcoming exhibition on February 8 at George Junior High, located at 4601 Airport Ave, Rosenberg, TX 77471, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event provides an opportunity to support local artists and celebrate the creativity and skill that went into their submissions.

As finalists, Special Merit winners, Gold Medalists, and Best of Show recipients move forward in the competition, Lamar CISD is excited to see how they perform at the next stage, including the auction. Their achievements reflect the impact of programs like the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo School Art Program, which continues to inspire young Texans to explore and celebrate their Western heritage through art.
