La Michoacana Supermarket to Open in Former 99 Cent Only Store Location in Katy

October 08 2024

La Michoacana Supermarket is set to take over the former 99 Cent Only Store location at 342 S Mason Rd, Katy, TX 77450. According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), construction is scheduled to begin in early December 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.

The transition comes on the heels of a significant liquidation process that led to the closure of all 379 99 Cent Only Stores across California and Texas, including 16 locations in Houston. This shift opens up new opportunities for La Michoacana, a well-established chain dedicated to serving the Hispanic community.

Founded in February 1986, La Michoacana began as a small store in Houston, aiming not only to provide products but also to serve a community that was often overlooked. Over the years, with support from family members, the business has expanded significantly. “We made sure the business kept growing, creating jobs, services, values, and products never before seen in the Texas community,” the company states.

Originally opening a few stores in Houston, La Michoacana quickly recognized the increasing Hispanic population across various cities. Today, the supermarket chain operates around 140 stores, primarily in Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, with additional locations in smaller cities such as Corpus Christi, Lufkin, Bryan, and the Valley of Texas.

La Michoacana is particularly known for its focus on meats, offering fresh, juicy options prepared to meet customer preferences. The company emphasizes its commitment to quality and customer service, stating, “We will never forget our origins… nor that our main focus is meats.”

As La Michoacana prepares to open its new location in Katy, it aims to continue its mission of providing diverse products and services to the Hispanic community. The supermarket chain's expansion into Katy is expected to enhance the local shopping landscape and contribute to the community's cultural diversity.
