Katy Manor Reminder: Clocks Fall Back November 1
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, 2026. Clocks move back one hour to 1 a.m., returning Katy Manor to Central Standard Time. Phones and connected devices usually adjust automatically, but appliance, vehicle and wall clocks may need to be reset by hand.
The clock change is also a useful reminder to check household safety equipment and prepare for shorter evenings and cooler weather.
Test alarms and check their service life
Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms using the manufacturer's instructions. Replace batteries when needed and check whether any unit has reached the end of its recommended life. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends testing smoke alarms at least monthly and replacing smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. Follow the device's instructions, especially for sealed-battery models.
Check carbon monoxide alarms according to their own manufacturer's guidance. An alarm that fails a test should be addressed promptly rather than left until the next seasonal check.
Prepare heating and lighting
Inspect the HVAC air filter and replace it if needed. Replacement intervals vary with the filter, equipment and household conditions. Testing the heating system on a mild day can reveal a problem before a cold night. If the system malfunctions or produces a persistent unusual odor, turn it off and contact a qualified technician. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Because sunset arrives earlier by the clock, check porch and other exterior lights and adjust timers. Make sure a working flashlight and fresh batteries are easy to find if a fall storm causes an outage.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology confirms the November 1 time change. Residents may set manual clocks back before going to bed Saturday night if that is more convenient.
