Katy Labor Day 5K Returns to Cinco Ranch to Support The Ballard House and Ainsley’s Angels

Katy / Fulshear  /  Katy / Fulshear
July 07 2026

For many Katy families, Labor Day is a chance to slow down before the fall routine fully takes over. This year, it is also an opportunity to lace up, show up and help neighbors facing some of life’s hardest moments.

The Keller Williams Premier Katy Labor Day 5K and Kids 1K Family Walk will take place Monday, September 7, 2026, at Villagio Town Center in Cinco Ranch, bringing runners, walkers, children, families and volunteers together for a community race with a deeply local mission.

Formerly known as the Back to School 5K, the event has grown into more than a holiday morning run. Proceeds will benefit The Ballard House in Katy and Ainsley’s Angels of America, two organizations focused on care, inclusion and support for families who need it most.

Race Proceeds Benefit The Ballard House and Ainsley’s Angels

The Ballard House, located in Katy, provides no-cost temporary lodging for patients and caregivers who travel to the Houston area for life-saving medical treatment. Since opening its doors in 2013, The Ballard House has provided more than 106,000 nights of no-cost lodging, giving families a safe, welcoming place to stay while they navigate medical care far from home.

For patients and caregivers traveling to Houston, that support can mean more than a room. It can mean rest, stability, encouragement and a home-away-from-home during an uncertain season.

Race proceeds will also benefit Ainsley’s Angels of America, an organization that works to ensure people of all abilities can experience endurance events. Through inclusion in races and community activities, Ainsley’s Angels helps build awareness and support for America’s special needs community.

What to Know About the Katy Labor Day 5K

The Keller Williams Premier Katy Labor Day 5K will be held on a flat and fast course along Peek Road in Katy. The 5K is a certified, chip-timed race, making it a strong option for competitive runners chasing a personal record as well as casual participants who simply want to enjoy the morning for a good cause.

The 5K is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:30 a.m. with Ainsley’s Angels athletes in their chariots. The rest of the 5K field will start at 7:35 a.m., with the fastest runners asked to line up toward the front. According to the event website, this 5K is identified as a USATF certified course.

All 5K registrants receive a race shirt and chipped bib. Awards will be presented to overall winners, masters winners and age-group champions in 10-year age groups.

Kids 1K and Family Walk Make the Event Welcoming for All Ages

Families who want a shorter, more relaxed option can participate in the Kids 1K and Family Walk, which begins at 7:10 a.m. after announcements and the national anthem.

The Kids 1K is not timed, but it is designed to be fun and encouraging for younger participants. All Kids 1K finishers will receive a prize at the end. Participants registered for the 5K may also join a family member in the 1K but are asked to avoid the timing mats.

For families in Katy, Cinco Ranch, Fulshear, Richmond and surrounding West Houston communities, the event offers a simple way to spend Labor Day morning together while supporting organizations that make a real difference close to home.

Registration, Pricing and Shirt Deadline

Registration is open now for the Keller Williams Premier Katy Labor Day 5K and Kids 1K Family Walk.

The current 5K registration fee is $45, plus a $3.70 sign-up fee, through August 8, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. CDT. After that, the price increases to $50, plus a $4 sign-up fee, from August 8 at 12:02 a.m. through race morning on September 7 at 7 a.m.

Online registration closes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.

Participants are encouraged to register before August 13 to guarantee their race shirt size. Those who sign up after August 13 are not guaranteed a shirt or their preferred size, though organizers will make reasonable efforts to accommodate runners and walkers through race day.

Race-day registrations will receive a bib, but shirts and packets will only be provided if available after the race.

Registration is available at runsignup.com/Race/TX/Katy/KatyBacktoSchool5K

Packet Pickup and Race Day Details

Packet pickup will be held at Good Times Running Company, located at 2764 Westheimer Pkwy #650 in Katy.

Packet pickup times are:

  • Friday, September 4, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 5, from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 6, from noon to 3 p.m.

Race day registration and packet pickup will begin at 5:45 a.m. Monday, September 7, in the courtyard of Villagio Town Center under the Katy Area Running Club tent. Race day pickup closes at 6:45 a.m. sharp.

Race packets not picked up by 6:45 a.m. on race day will be given to participating runners on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone needing to exchange a shirt size may check with staff after the race at the KARC tent.

After the race, participants are encouraged to stay for sponsor tents and the awards ceremony, which is expected to begin around 9 a.m. The event is scheduled to end at 9:30 a.m.

The race is planned as a rain-or-shine event. In the case of severe weather, organizers may delay the start, direct participants to shelter in the garage or cancel the event to keep everyone safe.

Volunteers Needed for Race Day

Those who cannot run or walk on Labor Day can still support the cause by volunteering. Volunteers play an important role in helping the event run smoothly, from race morning logistics to participant support.

Volunteer opportunities are available through the race registration page by selecting “More” and then “Volunteer.”

Katy Area Running Club Helps Bring the Community Together

The event is supported by Katy Area Running Club, also known as KARC, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization through its association with the Road Runners Club of America. KARC serves area runners and the local running community, welcoming runners and walkers of all experience levels.

That community spirit is part of what makes the Katy Labor Day 5K meaningful. Some participants will arrive with a goal time in mind. Others will come with strollers, children, friends or coworkers. Many will be there because they know The Ballard House has helped families during medical crises, or because they believe endurance events should be open and accessible to everyone.

However they cross the finish line, participants will be helping make a difference one step at a time.
