Katy ISD Students Rank Among Nation’s Top 1%: Six Seniors Earn Prestigious National Merit Scholarships

For families across Katy ISD, academic success is more than a personal milestone—it reflects the strength of local schools, educators, and community support systems. That connection was on full display this week as six seniors from Jordan High School, Tompkins High School, and Seven Lakes High School were named National Merit Scholarship winners, placing them among the most accomplished students in the United States.

Out of more than 1.5 million high school seniors nationwide, fewer than one percent reach this level of distinction. For Katy-area residents, that recognition signals not only individual achievement, but also the continued reputation of Katy ISD as one of the top-performing school districts in Texas.

What the National Merit Scholarship Means

The National Merit Scholarship Program, now in its 71st year, is widely considered one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the country. Each year, approximately 6,700 students ultimately receive scholarships funded by corporations and foundations.

These awards recognize students for:

  • Exceptional academic performance
  • Leadership and extracurricular involvement
  • Strong potential for success in college and beyond

For many recipients, the scholarships also provide meaningful financial support as they pursue degrees in fields such as engineering, medicine, business, and technology—career paths that often lead to long-term economic and community impact.

The Students Representing Katy ISD on a National Stage

The six Katy ISD seniors earning corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships include:

  • Caleb M. Albers, Jordan High School – National Merit Fluor Scholarship
  • Arjun R. Chandupatla, Tompkins High School – National Merit Siemens Scholarship
  • Shreyas R. Kini, Tompkins High School – National Merit Chevron Scholarship
  • Sean B. Lu, Tompkins High School – National Merit Chevron Scholarship
  • Jay Sahni, Jordan High School – National Merit Nextera Energy, Inc. Scholarship
  • Matthew E. Tsang, Seven Lakes High School – National Merit Occidental Petroleum Corporation Scholarship

Their achievements place Katy ISD firmly on the national academic map, reinforcing what many local parents and real estate professionals already recognize: strong schools remain a cornerstone of the community’s growth and desirability.

A Reflection of Community Investment

District leaders say the recognition goes beyond test scores. It reflects years of support from teachers, families, and the broader Katy community.

“These students represent the very best of Katy ISD and exemplify the academic excellence and perseverance we strive to cultivate across the District,” said Chief Academic Officer Christine Caskey. “Their achievement reflects not only their dedication, but also the strong support of our educators and families who help prepare them for success at the highest levels.”

For residents, that statement resonates. Academic success stories like this often translate into increased confidence in local schools, stronger property values tied to school performance, and a sense of pride in community identity.

Why This Matters for Katy Residents

In fast-growing areas like Katy, where families often choose neighborhoods based on school quality, achievements like these carry real-world implications. Recognition at the national level reinforces the district’s ability to prepare students for competitive college programs and future careers.

It also highlights a broader trend: Katy ISD continues to produce high-achieving graduates capable of competing at the highest levels nationwide, helping maintain the area’s reputation as a destination for education-focused families.

What Happens Next for These Students

As National Merit Scholars, these six seniors will move forward with both financial support and national recognition as they begin their college journeys. Many are expected to pursue degrees in high-demand fields, potentially returning to contribute to industries that impact the Greater Houston area and beyond.

For younger students in Katy ISD, their success offers a clear example of what’s possible—and for parents, a reminder of the opportunities available within their local schools.

As Katy continues to grow, moments like this help define the community—not just by how many people move in, but by the achievements of the students who call it home.
