For hundreds of Katy ISD students, academic achievement during the 2025–2026 school year went beyond earning strong grades or completing advanced coursework. It meant finishing a demanding, multi-year program designed to prepare students for the kind of independent research, analysis and communication they will encounter in college and beyond.

Katy ISD announced September 4 that 330 students earned the AP Capstone Diploma during the 2025–2026 school year, while another 27 students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

The results span all 10 Katy ISD high school campuses listed by the district and reflect an academic pathway centered not simply on memorizing information, but on learning how to investigate questions, evaluate evidence, develop arguments and communicate conclusions.

What Is the AP Capstone Diploma?

AP Capstone is a College Board diploma program built around two yearlong courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.

Rather than focusing on a single academic subject, the program emphasizes skills that can be applied across disciplines, including critical thinking, academic research, collaboration, presentations and time management.

Students pursuing the full AP Capstone Diploma must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research, along with scores of 3 or higher on four additional AP Exams of their choosing.

Once awarded, the distinction is included on AP score reports sent to colleges.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research but do not complete the additional four qualifying AP Exams can earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

That distinction makes the program particularly relevant for students preparing for college, where researching unfamiliar topics, analyzing competing viewpoints and defending conclusions are often part of everyday coursework.

Katy ISD Celebrates Students’ Academic Achievement

Katy ISD Director of Advanced Academics Danielle Sanchez said students completing the program took on both challenging coursework and meaningful research projects with support from their teachers.

“We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our AP Capstone students,” Sanchez said. “With the guidance of their dedicated teachers, these students embraced challenging coursework and pursued meaningful research aligned with their interests. The skills they developed through this program will serve them well in college, their careers and beyond."

That emphasis on student-selected research is one of the features that distinguishes AP Capstone from many traditional advanced courses. Students are expected to explore complex questions, weigh sources and perspectives, and ultimately produce and defend original work.

For Katy-area families, the recognition represents more than another academic credential. It reflects students learning how to manage long-term projects, speak confidently about their findings and make evidence-based decisions — skills that can follow them into universities, workplaces and civic life.

Seven Lakes, Tompkins and Jordan Lead Katy ISD AP Capstone Results

The district's largest number of AP Capstone Diploma recipients came from Seven Lakes High School, where 96 students earned the distinction.

Tompkins High School followed closely with 91 recipients, while Jordan High School had 78.
