The Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees has officially approved the instructional calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. The new calendar reflects a slightly earlier start date and a continued focus on balancing instructional days with ample holiday breaks, drawing comparisons to the previously approved 2025-2026 calendar.
Key Dates for the 2026-2027 School Year:
-
First Day of School: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
-
Last Day of School for Seniors: Friday, May 14, 2027
-
Last Day of School: Thursday, May 20, 2027
In comparison, the 2025-2026 calendar scheduled the first day of school for Wednesday, August 13, 2025, with the last day for seniors on Friday, May 15, 2026, and the final day for all students on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The minor shift in dates is part of Katy ISD's flexibility under its designation as a District of Innovation, which allows adjustments to the instructional calendar that fall outside the traditional Texas Education Code provisions.

Balancing Instructional Time and Breaks
Both calendars share a commitment to maintaining a balanced academic year. The 2026-2027 calendar includes 83 instructional days in the fall semester and 89 days in the spring semester, mirroring the structure of the 2025-2026 calendar. District holidays remain largely unchanged, including time off for Independence Day, Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Memorial Day. Families will continue to enjoy a full week off for Thanksgiving, two weeks for the Winter Holiday and New Year’s, and a weeklong Spring Break.
However, the 2025-2026 calendar included additional district holidays in October and April, which are not present in the newly approved 2026-2027 calendar. These changes highlight the district's ongoing adjustments to accommodate instructional requirements and community preferences.
Updates to Flex Days and Professional Development
In addition to approving the 2026-2027 calendar, the Katy ISD Board amended the 2025-2026 calendar to align with updated guidance from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The amendment retains flex day options for staff while allowing the district to maximize professional development waiver minutes toward required instructional time.
Community Input and Transparency
Both calendar decisions were shaped by significant community input. Earlier this school year, Katy ISD conducted surveys inviting parents, students, and staff to provide feedback on proposed calendar options. Thousands of responses guided the development of the 2026-2027 calendar, emphasizing the district’s commitment to community engagement and transparency in decision-making.
