Houston Wealth Management Advisor Awarded $20,000 Grant from Northwestern Mutual to Benefit The Periwinkle Foundation

May 11 2023

Celebrating the philanthropic work of its financial advisors, Northwestern Mutual is recognizing the individuals who have shown outstanding volunteerism and leadership through its 2023 Community Service Awards.

Now in its 28th year, the awards program is distributing $270,000 to nonprofits nationwide. Houston resident Michael Slabic, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual Houston, has been named a 2023 Community Service Award winner, receiving a $15,000 grant for The Periwinkle Foundation. Slabic has also received an additional $5,000 grant for supporting an organization with a connection to the company's Childhood Cancer Program, a 10-year-long initiative that benefits children with cancer by funding research and supporting families affected by the disease.

"Northwestern Mutual is a company built on helping people, and it is inspiring to see the impact that these financial advisors are making on their communities through selfless contributions," said Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "I'm honored to work alongside these dedicated advisors who embody our company's values and commitment to the communities we serve."

The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening conditions. What began as a basic camp for children with cancer, grew to become robust camps, arts and survivor programs serving more than 14,000 children, teens, families and long-term survivors. Slabic's involvement and ability to leverage his relationships with clients and friends has resulted in over $196,000 raised for the organization. The money has enabled The Periwinkle Foundation to continue to add new life-enhancing programs for patients and families treated at the Texas Children's Hospital.

"Each year, more than 14,000 children are touched by The Periwinkle Foundation's programs free of charge," said Slabic. "The Periwinkle Foundation provides opportunities for these special children and their families to heal emotionally, lead fuller lives and become stronger survivors. The grant will be used to continue and expand these very important and impactful programs."

Since the program's inception in 1995, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has donated nearly $7 million to nonprofits across the country. In celebrating the volunteer work of its financial advisors, the company deepens its dedication to giving back to the communities it serves.
