Houston Food Bank Makes Urgent Call for Volunteers to Aid Ongoing Hurricane Beryl Relief Efforts

July 16 2024

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl that left a devastating impact across the Greater Houston area, the Houston Food Bank is in urgent need of volunteers to bolster relief efforts. Thousands of Houstonians are left without power, and the Houston Food Bank is a critical lifeline for these affected individuals and families.

The Houston Food Bank, a staple in the community since 1982, aims to provide food for better lives, filling empty plates with healthy food and fresh produce, particularly in times of difficulty. Currently, the organization and its volunteers need to pack 10,000 disaster boxes per day to support Hurricane Beryl relief efforts, and they need your help.

As of Sunday, July 14, the Houston Food Bank has delivered 2,910,283 lbs. of disaster supplies, including 473 pallets of water, 253 pallets of disaster boxes and 1,490 pallets of  produce and snacks to their partner distribution organizations in response to Hurricane Beryl. On the July 11 alone, the Houston Food Bank distributed 567,000 pounds of disaster relief supplies, which is equivalent to 14 tractor trailer loads. All of this output is in addition to their regular distribution.

Beyond the immediate crisis, the Houston Food Bank regularly distributes to partner agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties, stretching far beyond the Houston city limits. It provides access to 120 million nutritious meals through its extensive network of 1,600 community partners. This includes food pantries, soup kitchens, social service providers, and schools.

Volunteers are the backbone of the Houston Food Bank's operation. Individuals and groups, including children, are welcome to participate. Volunteering is not confined to weekdays, with shifts available from Monday to Sunday. Activities volunteers can expect to be involved in include sorting and packing non-perishable foods and cleaning supplies, repacking dry food into family-sized bags, and packaging hot meals in the food bank's commercial kitchen.

Houstonians have demonstrated remarkable resilience and community spirit throughout relief efforts in response to Hurricane Beryl. Almost 8,100 volunteer hours have been given to aid hurricane recovery as of July 15. Still, there is a pressing need for additional help.
