About Houston Choral Society
Houston Choral Society (HCS) is a not-for-profit, professional quality, civic chorus that has been serving the greater Houston area for more than 35 years. Our mission is to perform great choral music and advance the choral arts to Houston audiences.
A wide variety of literature composes our repertoire, with works by Handel, Mozart, Brahms, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, to more modern styles of music. Additionally, we often collaborate with professional musicians from the Houston area as well as outstanding local high school and collegiate choral ensembles.
This season (2022/23) started with a Brahms/Beethoven pairing with Brahms’ Nänie and Beethoven’s Mass in C. After a traditional Christmas concert and a night of Broadway Hits, the season will have a Grand Finale with Jubilate Deo by Dan Forrest.
Last season (2021/22) saw a return to live performances after the pandemic restrictions, with commissioned pieces by renowned Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo as well as Mozart’s Requiem with full orchestra. The season ended with a singing three-city tour of Italy, which included singing a mass at the Vatican.
Pre Covid, HCS performed Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass at Carnegie Hall in New York City. HCS has performed many concerts over the course of five international tours performing in England/Scotland, Italy, Hungary/Austria/Czech Republic, Ireland, and Germany/Austria.
HCS is funded in part by grants by such sponsors as the Houston Arts Alliance, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
