Houston-Area State Parks Invite Families to Celebrate 2026 with First Day Hikes, Beach Walks, and Outdoor Fun

December 22 2025

New Year’s Day is just around the corner, and for those in Greater Houston looking to begin 2026 with intention, adventure, and community spirit, Texas State Parks are offering the perfect opportunity: First Day Hikes.

Held annually on January 1 and part of a national initiative to encourage outdoor activity, First Day Hikes bring families, friends, and nature lovers together for guided and self-guided hikes, beach walks, paddles, birding, and even cold-water plunges. And this year’s events are especially meaningful as they also mark the beginning of the America 250 celebration — the official countdown to the 250th anniversary of the United States.

“There is no better way to spend a beautiful January day than walking with friends and family at a Texas State Park,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “Each year, Texas leads the nation as thousands of Texans turn out to a nearby state park to ring in the new year and celebrate with a First Day Hike.”

Last year, Texas shattered records with nearly 9,500 participants hiking over 18,000 miles on New Year’s Day alone. Now, with a full slate of outdoor events across the Houston metro area and beyond, 2026 is set to be the most active year yet.

Celebrate America 250 in the Great Outdoors

First Day Hikes across the Houston region are more than just a way to burn off holiday indulgence — they’re part of a nationwide kickoff to the U.S. Semiquincentennial. As Paul McCormack, President of America’s State Parks, explains: “We invite you to start your year on a First Day Hike enjoying and celebrating our incredible public lands.”

So whether you're walking the Gulf shoreline at sunrise, birdwatching in the wetlands, paddling a quiet bayou, or plunging into a frigid lake, First Day Hikes offer a chance to reflect, reconnect, and restart — all in the beauty of Texas’ natural spaces.
