Heffernan BBQ Closing in Cypress: Texas Monthly-Recognized Barbecue Trailer Announces Final Service June 19

For many Cypress residents, a trip to Heffernan BBQ wasn't just about picking up brisket or ribs. It was about supporting a local family that turned a passion project into one of the area's most respected barbecue operations.

After nearly two decades in business, Heffernan BBQ has announced it will close following its final service on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Brew:30 Taphouse on Telge Road. The announcement came as a surprise to many fans, particularly because owner and pitmaster Evan Heffernan described 2026 as the business's "best year to date."

"Things change fast and unfortunately some obstacles are unsurpassable," Evan Heffernan wrote in a June 15 social media post announcing the closure. "We have made great strides over the last year and 2026 has been our best year to date, but it isn't going to be enough. It's time to shut it down and move on."

A Cypress Family Story Built Around Barbecue

The roots of Heffernan BBQ stretch back to the early 2000s when Bob and Jeannie Heffernan began serving barbecue after years of competing in cook-offs and preparing food for community fundraisers. What started with a borrowed trailer gradually evolved into a full-time family business known throughout Cypress and the Houston area for its pecan-smoked meats, homemade sides and desserts.

The family's story took a dramatic turn in 2017 when Bob Heffernan was diagnosed with lung cancer. According to a 2025 feature by Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn, Bob's diagnosis prompted his younger son, Evan, to leave college and learn the craft from his father in an effort to preserve the family business and recipes.

Bob passed away later that year, but not before teaching Evan the fundamentals of the barbecue operation he had spent years building. In the years that followed, Evan gradually developed his own style while maintaining many of the traditions that made Heffernan BBQ a local favorite.

From Family Legacy to Houston Barbecue Recognition

Under Evan's leadership, Heffernan BBQ evolved from a catering-focused operation into a destination for barbecue enthusiasts seeking traditional Texas barbecue with a distinctive touch.

Unlike many Texas barbecue establishments that rely on post oak, Heffernan BBQ continued using pecan wood, a hallmark of Bob Heffernan's original approach. Customers regularly praised the restaurant's smoked brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, house-made sausage and homemade desserts, particularly its banana pudding.

The business earned growing recognition throughout the Texas barbecue community. In October 2025, Heffernan BBQ was included on Texas Monthly's list of the Best BBQ in Houston. The operation also earned multiple appearances on Houston-area "Top BBQ" rankings and secured second place at the 2024 HOUBBQ Throwdown, one of the region's premier barbecue competitions.

Texas Monthly's Daniel Vaughn described Heffernan BBQ as a worthy destination for barbecue fans exploring the Houston area, highlighting the quality of the meats, house-made sausage program, homemade sides and the family's commitment to carrying forward Bob Heffernan's legacy.

A Difficult Decision Despite Positive Momentum

The closure announcement comes just six months after Evan reflected on the challenges and successes of 2025.

In a December 2025 post, he described the year as both difficult and rewarding, citing significant personal and business expenses while noting that he had grown into the pitmaster he aspired to become. At the time, the family made strategic decisions to reduce costs, including stepping away from festival appearances and focusing exclusively on serving customers from their home base at Brew:30 Taphouse.

That strategy appeared to be working.

According to Evan, 2026 represented the strongest year in the business's history. However, despite increased momentum and continued customer support, operational challenges ultimately led to the decision to close.

For many local customers, the announcement serves as a reminder of the realities facing independent restaurants and food businesses, even those with strong reputations and loyal customer bases.

One Final Opportunity for Cypress Residents

The final service for Heffernan BBQ is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Brew:30 Taphouse, located at 15914 Telge Road in Cypress. Customers can expect the same menu that helped build the restaurant's reputation, including pecan-smoked brisket, ribs, pulled pork, house-made sausage and homemade sides.

While the closure marks the end of Heffernan BBQ in its current form, Evan's farewell message left room for future possibilities.

"I'm not sure what comes next, but I don't think this is the end for me in BBQ. Time will tell."

For Cypress residents and Houston-area barbecue fans, that message offers a measure of hope. While Heffernan BBQ may be serving its final plates this week, the story of a family business built on perseverance, community support and a love of barbecue may not be over just yet.

What Happens Next

The Heffernan family has not announced any future barbecue projects. For now, customers wishing to support the family one last time can visit the trailer during its final service on June 19. Whether or not another venture emerges down the road, Heffernan BBQ leaves behind a lasting impact on Cypress' local food scene and a legacy rooted in family, resilience and Texas barbecue tradition.
