For anyone in Fulshear who has been meaning to pick up a paintbrush, finish that half-forgotten crochet project or simply find a quiet way to unwind, the local library is offering a reason to make time for it this October.

The Fulshear Branch Library will host a series of free arts and crafts programs for teens and adults throughout the month, with options ranging from watercolor painting and papercrafting to needlework and coloring. The programs are designed to be approachable, including for people who may not consider themselves particularly artistic.

It is another way the relatively new library is settling into its role as more than a place to check out books. The 41,980-square-foot Fulshear Branch Library opened in late 2023 and celebrated its grand opening in January 2024, replacing the former Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library. Now the third-largest location in the Fort Bend County Libraries system, the two-story facility was built in part to provide more room for programs, meetings and lifelong learning as the Fulshear area continues to grow. 

Watercolors Offer a Beginner-Friendly Place to Start

Residents curious about watercolor painting can try Art Antics: Watercolor Wonders on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Multipurpose Room.

The monthly class welcomes beginners as well as participants with some watercolor experience, and each session stands on its own, so there is no need to have attended a previous class. Participants explore subjects ranging from landscapes and still life to animals and abstract art. October's theme will be "Mountainous View."

Materials are provided, but registration is required. Residents can register through the Fort Bend County Libraries events calendar or by calling the branch at 346-481-6800. 

Bring the Yarn, Needles and Unfinished Projects

For knitters, crocheters and sewers, Nifty Needlers offers a relaxed place to work alongside other local crafters. The group typically meets on the second Saturday and third Tuesday of each month, but there will be just one October gathering.

Nifty Needlers will meet Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. Participants can bring their yarn, string, needles and current projects, and all skill levels are welcome. No registration is required. 

Scrapbooks, Journals and Zines Get Their Own Afternoon

Paper crafters will also have room to spread out during Papercraft Projects on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Conference Room.

Teens and adults can bring scrapbooks, journals, collages, zines or other paper projects and use library supplies to add new pages and embellishments. As library staff put it, “Come relax, get creative, and take home your own paper masterpiece.”

A Weekly Hour to Color and Unwind

One of the easiest programs to drop into may also be one of the simplest. Adult Coloring Hour gives teens and adults a place to sit down, color and listen to relaxing music for an hour each Thursday.

October sessions are scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. The Oct. 1 and Oct. 8 sessions will meet in the Multipurpose Room, while the Oct. 15, 22 and 29 gatherings will be held in the Conference Room. Participants may bring their own coloring pages and supplies or use designs and materials available at the library. No registration is required. The library's current event calendar confirms the weekly format and describes the program as an opportunity to unwind while coloring. 

Creativity for Younger Fulshear Residents, Too

Families looking for arts and crafts programs for younger children can search the Fort Bend County Libraries event calendar and filter for Fulshear Branch Library, then select Preschool, Elementary or Middle Grades as the age group and Arts & Crafts as the program type. The branch regularly offers children's activities alongside its teen and adult programming.

For a community that has grown considerably since Fulshear's original branch library opened in 1998, these programs offer something simple but increasingly valuable: a free place to learn something new, work with one's hands and spend a little time creating alongside neighbors.
