Fort Bend County Opens Warming Centers as Hard Freeze and Dangerous Wind Chills Approach

January 30 2026

With a hard freeze and dangerously low wind chills forecast for Southeast Texas, Fort Bend County has activated its emergency warming centers to provide shelter and relief for residents in need.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens and low 20s across the region, with wind chills plunging even further — as low as 14°F in some areas. According to the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for most of Southeast Texas from 3 AM to 10 AM Saturday, January 31, followed by a Freeze Watch from 9 PM Saturday through 9 AM Sunday, February 1.

In response to these extreme cold conditions, the county has opened both overnight and daytime warming centers across Fort Bend, ensuring residents have access to safe, heated locations during the cold snap.

To stay safe, residents are urged to take precautions and follow the “4 P’s”:

  • People – Check on elderly neighbors, those with disabilities, and others at risk.
  • Pets – Bring pets indoors and ensure they are not exposed to freezing conditions.
  • Pipes – Wrap and insulate exposed pipes to prevent bursts.
  • Plants – Cover or bring in sensitive vegetation.

Additional cold weather tips include:

  • Limit time spent outdoors.
  • Dress in warm, layered clothing.
  • Cover all exposed skin.
  • Ensure proper use of space heaters — no flammable materials nearby.
  • Confirm that carbon monoxide detectors are functional.

Stay Informed and Be Prepared

Fort Bend County officials urge residents to remain updated through official county communications and emergency alerts.

As temperatures continue to fall and icy conditions loom, Fort Bend County is leaning on the strength of its community, ensuring that no one is left out in the cold. Whether it’s a library branch, a nonprofit partner, or a simple wellness check on a neighbor, these acts of connection are what help residents weather the storm — together.
