Festive Trips Keep Katy Seniors Young at Heart with December Outings

December 02 2025

As the holiday season gets into full swing, the Katy Fussell Senior Center is helping local seniors stay active, connected, and full of cheer with a festive lineup of December trips and outings. From sparkling light tours to heartwarming volunteer opportunities, each event promises fun, friendship, and a sense of community.

Located in the heart of Katy, the Fussell Senior Citizen Center has been a hub for active seniors since its opening in 2012. Operated by the City of Katy's Senior Services Department, the center is well-known for its award-winning programming and vibrant calendar of events designed to enrich the lives of older adults. Recognized as Houston’s Best Senior Center in both 2017 and 2018 by the Senior Resource Guide’s Annual Reader’s Choice Award, the center continues to live out its motto: “Why stay at home when you can go?”

This December, the spirit of that motto shines brightly through a diverse offering of trips that are equal parts festive and fulfilling:

Katy Christmas Lights Tour

Friday, December 5, 2025 | 5:30 – 9:00 PM

Seniors can hop aboard the city bus for a joyful ride through some of Katy’s most beautifully decorated neighborhoods. It’s a relaxing and enchanting way to soak in the holiday spirit with friends, laughter, and a bit of nostalgia. (No advance cost)

Caroling with the Songbirds Group

Wednesday, December 10, 2025 | 12:00 – 4:00 PM

Seniors are invited to join the Songbirds for a day of spreading holiday cheer throughout local businesses and senior communities. No tryouts are required, and everyone is welcome—just show up with a smile and your singing voice. Rehearsals take place Mondays and Fridays at 10:30 AM at the center. (No advance cost)

Holiday Lights Boat Tour Along the Riverwalk

Wednesday, December 17, 2025 | 1:00 – 11:00 PM

This magical trip whisks participants to San Antonio for an evening of lights, cocoa, and holiday music, all from the comfort of a GO RIO riverboat. Seniors are asked to park across the street and arrive at the senior center no earlier than 12:30 PM. Dinner is not included, so plan to bring some extra money for the meal. (Advance cost: $75 + dinner)

Christmas Lights Tour

Thursday, December 18 | 5:30 – 9:00 PM

Another festive favorite returns with this local Christmas lights tour. With no cost to participate, this trip offers an easy and enjoyable way to take in the magic of Katy’s holiday displays. (No advance cost)

Camp Hope Delivery

Monday, December 22, 2025 | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

This meaningful trip gives seniors a chance to give back by helping deliver donated items to Camp Hope, a Houston-based facility supporting veterans. Volunteers will assist with unloading the bus and stocking the warehouse. All helping hands are appreciated. (No cost)

Movies and Lunch

Monday, December 22 | 11 AM – 4 PM

Seniors can round out the season with a relaxing movie outing followed by lunch. While the exact details will be shared a week prior, participants only need to bring money for their ticket and meal. (Cost: pay for your ticket and meal)

According to the National Institute on Aging, engaging in regular social activities and community-based outings like these can improve both mental and physical health in older adults. Participation in group trips has been shown to reduce loneliness, enhance mood, and even support better mobility and cognitive function over time.

That’s why the Fussell Senior Center’s approach is more than just fun—it’s rooted in well-being. With programs designed to “stimulate the heart, mind, and physical well-being,” the center continues to be a cornerstone of senior life in Katy. Each outing provides not just a new experience, but also a chance to stay connected, give back, and keep that youthful spirit alive.

For seniors looking to make the most of the season, these festive outings offer the perfect opportunity to celebrate, volunteer, and explore—because as the folks at Fussell like to say, “Why stay at home when you can go?”
