Ensure Your Voice is Heard: How and Where to Register to Vote in Fort Bend County Before the Deadline

Today, October 7, 2024, marks the final day for Fort Bend County residents to register to vote in the upcoming General Election on November 5. This election is significant, as it will not only feature presidential candidates but also numerous local, state, and congressional races, making it essential for residents to ensure they are prepared to participate.

To register, residents can conveniently do so online through the Texas Secretary of State’s website or by mailing in a completed voter registration application. For those choosing to register online, simply visit the Texas Secretary of State's voter registration application page. If you prefer to register by mail, print the application and send it to the Fort Bend County Elections office at 301 Jackson St., Richmond, TX 77469-3108. According to VoteTexas.gov, a service provided by the Texas Secretary of State, residents are eligible to register to vote if the following criteria apply:

  • You are a United States citizen;
  • You are a resident of the county where you submit the application;
  • You are at least 17 years and 10 months old on the date your voter registration application is submitted, and you are 18 years of age on Election Day.
  • You are not a convicted felon (you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole); and
  • You have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

Once registered, voters must present a valid form of photo ID when voting in person. Acceptable IDs include a Texas Driver’s License, Texas Personal Identification Card, Texas Election Identification Certificate, Texas Handgun License, U.S. Military ID, U.S. Passport, and other specified forms of ID. It’s important to note that most IDs should not be expired for more than four years. If you do not possess a photo ID, you may provide alternative documents, such as a utility bill or bank statement, and complete a "Reasonable Impediment Declaration."
