Enhancing Access to Legal Resources: Harris County Launches LAWPods in Libraries

April 17 2024

The recently installed Legal Access Workspace Pod (LAWPod) at Katherine Tyra Branch Library in Harris County has set a new benchmark in making access to legal resources easier than ever. This innovative initiative, taken by the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library, is a part of a broader plan to launch similar LAWPods across Harris County Public Libraries, aiming to create a seamless user experience for residents seeking legal help.

LAWPods are unique spaces that enable library users to access live virtual reference services from the renowned Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library. The dedicated computer station available at the LAWPod at Katherine Tyra Branch Library permits users to have one-on-one video calls with a Law Librarian who can guide them to valuable legal information. Users can be directed to relevant online forms and resources, guided to useful research materials, and referred to legal help, all in real-time.

However, it is important to note that the Law Librarian does not give legal advice, fill out forms or refer users to specific attorneys. Their goal is to connect users with useful legal resources and guides, not to substitute the advice of an attorney.

The innovative use of technology in LAWPods exemplifies a momentous stride in making legal resources more accessible. This LAWPod is the first of four planned installations across Harris County, amplifying the access to legal resources for residents residing in different parts of Harris County.

Interested users can book a session with the Law Librarian at the LAWPod by calling 713-755-5183. Online booking will soon be available at the LAWPod website. Organizations intending to participate in this initiative to bridge the access-to-justice gap can reach out to Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library. Outreach materials, like the LAWPod Tri-fold and LAWPod Flyer, are readily available for download and sharing to increase awareness about this initiative.
