Empowering Young Voices Through Music: Registration Now Open for the Award-Winning Katy Youth Choir

July 17 2024

The award-winning Katy Youth Choir has opened up registration, providing a golden opportunity for all children and youth regardless of their musical and lifestyle backgrounds to join a hands-on choral program that strives to give each child a voice through the power of music.

The Katy Youth Choir, a non-profit community choral program, prides itself on creating a safe and uplifting environment for diverse choristers to come together and create harmonious sounds. The focus is on teaching vocal and choral pedagogy through a variety of means, ranging from solfege and rhythmic exercises to movement, all designed to build on the musical foundations taught in previous stages of the program.

The story of Katy Youth Choir began in 2011 when Dr. Debra Siebert saw a need for a community choral program in Katy. Starting the Katy Children's Choir as a singing class in her home, Dr. Siebert's focus on musical theater and choral singing laid the foundation for what the program is today.

In 2015, the program took a significant leap forward when Megan Godfrey, an expert in directing children's choirs and teaching music, was brought on board. Fueled by her passion for children's choirs and her love for enterprise, Godfrey adopted and built upon Dr. Siebert's vision. As the Artistic and Executive Director, Godfrey guided the rebrand of the choir to Katy Youth Choir, a change that marked the start of a new chapter for the organization.

Under Godfrey's leadership, the choir has further solidified its reputation as a leading choral program. In 2018, the Bella Voce choir claimed a gold national ranking at the Worldstrides Festival in San Antonio, keeping its status in the top 10% of choirs in the United States. The Bella Voce choir, directed by Megan Godfrey, was the only community choir invited to the National Festival of Gold music competition in Chicago the following year, where it won silver, competing against high school choirs from across America and Canada.

Beyond regular practice and performances, the Katy Youth Choir program also organizes summer camps focusing on showchoir and musical theater skills. Additionally, as of 2020, the program has expanded to include a Spring Sing camp during spring break, offering more opportunities for its choristers to sing and perform.

Today, the Katy Youth Choir continues to adapt and expand to meet the needs of a changing community. Having recently added three more choirs, each named "voce" (the Italian word for voice), the organization hopes to reach even more children and youth, giving them a voice through the power of music.

By keeping registration open and offering scholarships and payment plans, the Katy Youth Choir ensures the program is accessible to all, staying true to its mission to give every child a voice. To learn more and register, visit katyyouthchoir.com
