Davenport High School Band Makes History as 2027 TMEA 4A Honor Band

For a high school that opened only six years ago, Davenport High School is building a musical résumé that would be impressive for a program with decades of history behind it.

Now, the Wolf Band has reached a new milestone: the Davenport High School Band has been named the 2027 Texas Music Educators Association 4A Honor Band, one of the highest distinctions available to a Texas school concert band. According to Comal ISD, Davenport is the first school in both Comal ISD and the San Antonio area to win the TMEA Honor Band designation in any classification.

The achievement carries significance beyond another trophy for the band room. For Davenport students, families and the surrounding community, it means a relatively young program will represent the area before thousands of music educators, musicians and school leaders at the 2027 TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio.

“I am proud of our students and their commitment to excellence,” Davenport High School Director of Bands Michael Lehmann said. “This is just the latest award that showcases the excellence, sacrifices and hard work exhibited by our current and past members and directors.”

What Is the TMEA Honor Band Award?

The TMEA Honor Band competition is designed to recognize outstanding Texas band programs through a competitive evaluation of recorded performances.

Bands do not earn the distinction through a single performance. They move through multiple levels of judging, with experienced music educators evaluating musical quality, artistry and technical achievement. TMEA’s 2026 competition calendar included region evaluations, area listening centers, state semifinals and state finals before the Honor Band selections were determined.

TMEA records show Davenport High School’s Wind Ensemble, directed by Lehmann, advanced from Region 12 through the Area EG competition before reaching both the state semifinals and state finals in the 4A classification.

That process helps explain why the designation is considered one of the most prestigious accomplishments in Texas music education: ensembles are judged on the music they produce rather than factors such as school size, crowd response or marching presentation.

Davenport Band Will Perform at 2027 TMEA Convention in San Antonio

As the 2027 TMEA 4A Honor Band, Davenport’s ensemble is scheduled to perform during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention on Feb. 11-12, 2027, in San Antonio. A specific concert schedule is expected to be announced later.

Comal ISD said the convention draws more than 30,000 attendees and serves as a major showcase for music education in Texas.

That creates a particularly fitting moment for Davenport: the students will not have to travel across Texas to represent their community. Instead, they will perform near home while carrying the distinction of being the first San Antonio-area band to earn the Honor Band title in any classification, according to the district.

“We are incredibly proud of our band program,” Davenport High School Principal Angela Looney said. “This achievement is a reflection of the talent, perseverance and character of our student musicians, directors and supportive families.”

A Young Band Program With a Growing Record of Success

The Honor Band recognition adds another chapter to a rapid rise for the Davenport High School Wolf Band.

Davenport High School opened six years ago, and its band has already grown into the largest student organization on campus. More than 230 students participate through marching band, color guard, jazz band and concert band classes.

The program’s recent accomplishments stretch across both marching and concert performance.

Since 2020, Davenport has reached the finals of the UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest four times, earning a bronze medal in 2024 and a silver medal in 2025. Those achievements contributed to Davenport High School earning the prestigious UIL 4A Lone Star Cup, which recognizes overall academic, athletic and fine arts performance.

The Wolf Band’s success also extends beyond marching season. Davenport’s color guard has won two Texas Color Guard Circuit state championships and earned a bronze medal in 2025. The Davenport Wind Ensemble was named a national winner of the 2025 Mark of Excellence, while the overall band program has earned multiple category victories in the Association of Texas Small School Bands Outstanding Performance Series.

More Than a Band Award for the Davenport Community

High school band programs are often measured by what audiences see on Friday nights or at competitions, but an Honor Band selection reflects months — and, in many ways, years — of rehearsal, instruction and student development.

For Davenport High School families, the recognition also highlights how quickly a campus tradition can take shape. Students who helped establish the program during its earliest years are now part of the history behind a statewide honor that future Wolf Band members will inherit.

The program’s directors include Michael Lehmann, Tyler McClendon, Elijah Paterson, Kelsey Lien and Nichele Rios, a staff whose work spans the different ensembles and performance areas that have helped make band one of the most visible student activities at Davenport.

And while other San Antonio-area bands have previously finished second in the Honor Band competition, Comal ISD says none had secured the top designation before Davenport.

For a school still early in its own history, that distinction gives students and families something unusually permanent: a place in Texas music education history.

What Happens Next for the Davenport High School Band?

Attention now turns toward Davenport’s TMEA Honor Band performance in February 2027, when the ensemble will take the stage in San Antonio before an audience drawn from across Texas and beyond.

Specific performance details have not yet been released, giving Wolf Band families and community supporters another announcement to watch for as the convention approaches.

The award may be statewide, but its roots are distinctly local — in rehearsals, family support, student commitment and a band program that has grown alongside Davenport High School itself.
