Crunch Fitness Plans 50,000-Square-Foot Willowbrook Gym in Northwest Houston
Northwest Houston residents could soon have another major fitness option close to home, with Crunch Fitness planning a large new gym along the busy FM 1960 corridor near Willowbrook Mall.
Construction information for the project lists 7736 FM 1960 Road West, Houston, TX 77070, which was previously Conn's HomePlus, as the site of a planned Crunch Fitness location. The project calls for the interior remodeling of an existing building into a 50,616-square-foot fitness center, representing a sizable new health and fitness destination for the Willowbrook and northwest Houston area.
The privately funded project carries an estimated construction cost of $1.2 million. Work is currently scheduled to begin Oct. 1, 2026, with construction listed for completion by March 31, 2027.
A specific grand opening date has not yet been announced.
New Crunch Fitness Planned Near Willowbrook Mall
The planned Crunch Fitness would put the national gym brand along FM 1960, one of northwest Houston's busiest commercial corridors and a major route serving Willowbrook, Champions, Klein, Cypress Creek and surrounding neighborhoods.
For residents who already travel along FM 1960 for shopping, dining, work and other errands, a gym of this size could add another fitness option within the area's established retail landscape.
At more than 50,000 square feet, the proposed facility would be substantial compared with many neighborhood fitness centers. The construction filing describes the work as an interior remodel of an existing building, rather than ground-up construction.
The filing does not yet detail the specific equipment, classes, amenities, membership pricing or operating hours planned for the Willowbrook Crunch Fitness. Those features can vary by club.
Crunch Fitness Has Grown From a New York Studio to More Than 600 Gyms
Crunch Fitness traces its roots to 1989, when the company began in a basement-level aerobics studio in New York City's Greenwich Village. The brand was built around making fitness accessible to a broad range of people rather than focusing exclusively on experienced athletes or traditional gym culture.
The company has since expanded dramatically. As of August 2026, Crunch reported more than 600 gyms serving approximately 3.5 million members, with clubs across more than 40 states as well as international markets including Australia, Canada, Costa Rica and India.
That growth has been driven in large part by franchising, with independently owned and operated clubs expanding the brand into communities across the country.
Crunch is also known for its "No Judgments" philosophy, which promotes an inclusive gym environment for people with different fitness levels, ages, goals and workout preferences. The company describes its approach as combining serious fitness with a less intimidating, more social atmosphere.
What Does Crunch Fitness Offer?
While amenities at the planned Willowbrook gym have not yet been announced, Crunch clubs commonly offer a mix of traditional gym equipment and structured fitness programs.
Depending on the location and membership level, Crunch facilities may include free weights, strength-training machines, cardio equipment, personal training, group fitness classes, yoga, Zumba, functional training and the company's HIITZone high-intensity interval training area. Some locations also offer recovery amenities such as HydroMassage, tanning, saunas, compression therapy and other Relax & Recover services.
Crunch operates under what it describes as a high-value, low-price fitness model. Membership structures and amenities differ by location, and the company offers multiple membership tiers at many franchise gyms.
The Willowbrook facility's membership rates and exact amenity package have not been released.
Crunch Fitness Already Has a Growing Greater Houston Presence
The Willowbrook project would join a growing network of Crunch Fitness gyms across Greater Houston.
Current Houston-area locations include Crunch Copperfield at 6575 Highway 6 North, approximately west of the planned Willowbrook club, as well as Crunch Kirkwood at 11940 Westheimer Road in west Houston. Both locations offer 24-hour access.
The brand also operates or has locations elsewhere around the metropolitan area, including Katy, Pearland, Humble and Atascocita. A Crunch Fitness club is also listed as coming soon to The Woodlands at 6700 Woodlands Parkway.
That expanding footprint reflects the company's broader national growth while giving Houston-area members more choices in where they exercise.
Why the Willowbrook Location Matters
For communities surrounding Willowbrook, Champions and Cypress Creek, the project represents another significant reuse of existing commercial space along FM 1960.
Large fitness centers can serve somewhat differently than traditional retail because customers often visit before or after work, during lunch breaks and throughout the evening. A gym exceeding 50,000 square feet could therefore draw regular traffic from several surrounding neighborhoods rather than relying only on shoppers already visiting the corridor.
The planned location could be particularly convenient for residents of northwest Houston searching for a gym near Willowbrook, fitness classes near FM 1960, personal training in northwest Houston or a 24-hour gym near the Champions area, although Crunch has not yet announced whether the new facility will operate around the clock.
Its location also places it within reasonable reach of residents in portions of Spring, Klein and the Cypress area who regularly use FM 1960.
What Happens Next for Crunch Fitness Willowbrook?
According to the project schedule, renovation work is expected to begin in October 2026 and continue through the end of March 2027.
Construction completion dates can change, and finishing the build-out does not necessarily mean a gym will open immediately afterward. Businesses typically still need to complete equipment installation, staffing, inspections and other opening preparations.
Crunch Fitness has not yet announced a grand opening date, presale membership period or detailed list of amenities for the Willowbrook location.
Still, the filing provides northwest Houston residents with an early look at what could become one of the larger fitness centers along the FM 1960 corridor.
