Community Spotlight: Fussell Senior Center in Katy
Have you ever been to the Fussell Senior Citizen Center, or heard about their special events? Far more than a place for local seniors to gather, the Fussell Senior Center has grown to become a cherished hub in the community.
In Historic Downtown Katy, at 5370 E 5th Street, the Fussell Senior Center is a focal point of activity, camaraderie, and rejuvenation for older adults across the Katy area. Open each weekday from 8am to 5pm, the Center strikes the perfect balance between maintaining a busy and vibrant lifestyle, all while promoting a sense of personal independence.
The Center, a member of the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), was established in 2012 and has since become an integral part of the Katy community. Its dedication to its mission did not go unnoticed, scooping up the title of Houston’s Best Senior Center in 2017 and 2018 for the Senior Resource Guide’s Annual Reader’s Choice Award.
The programming at Fussell Senior Center is both diverse and extensive, ranging from high-energy exercise sessions, craft workshops, group leisure bus trips, and book club meetings, to more casual gatherings like after-hours meetups. For the creative minds, the center hosts art, yarn crafts, and quilting groups. Health-conscious seniors can benefit from the center's healthy living education, while card, domino, and other games stimulate the minds of the participants.

As part of their commitment to community engagement, members of the Fussell Senior Center participate in events such as the Katy Rice Harvest Festival, Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and Senior Santa Market. The center also provides support to those caring for elderly loved ones through its senior caregiver support groups.
Another emerging event hosted by the Fussell Senior Center is their upcoming 2nd Annual Casino Night, slated for Friday, August 23, 2024. The event promises to offer the perfect mix of fun, games, and glamour. Everyone, regardless of their residence, is warmly invited to attend these events and partake in the bustling activity at the center. Seniors aged 55 and over, who can arrange their own transport to and from the center, are encouraged to join the Fussell Senior Center completely free of charge.

Research indicates that seniors who remain socially active and engaged see improvements in cognitive health, physical wellbeing, and overall life satisfaction.
