Cinco de Mayo
A Brief History
Every year, a celebration is held on May 5, which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, the poorly equipped and outnumbered Mexican troops defeated the larger, well-armed French army, delivering a much-needed morale boost for the Mexicans. Ultimately, the French defeated the Mexican army at the Second Battle of Puebla and occupied Mexico City, but the pride in Mexico's initial victory lives on.
