Chorus Director Asserts, Ladies, This is a Football!

November 05 2022

The Woodlands Show Chorus (TWSC) achieved their goal of Top Ten placement internationally in the Sweet Adelines International (SAI) Competition at the Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix, Arizona in September of this year.  Betty Clipman, world renowned Director and Coach of TWSC, began their first rehearsal with her hand held high, holding an imaginary football and stating, “Ladies, this is a football!”  Her 10-year-old, four-part-harmony, a’cappella style chorus of women of all ages smiled, because they knew the drill.  Betty normally began the first rehearsal after a successful campaign with that statement, imitating the great football coach, Vince Lombardi, who also began the first practice after one of the team’s perpetually winning championship season.  The purpose was to let the players know that no matter how well their season went, they would start over with the basics.  Thus, Director Clipman begins with the basic breathing techniques, vocal production and performance skills with the help of her staff of Associate and Assistant Directors, as well as coaches from all over the world.

Betty considers that “the building of advanced skills depends on mastery of the basics.” Vince Lombardi, the infamous American football coach and executive in the National Football League, is considered by many (and definitely by Ms. Clipman) to be the greatest coach in football history and recognized as one of the greatest coaches and leaders in the history of all American sports. Master Director Clipman likewise is regarded as top in her field around the world with over 50 years’ experience, covering all aspects of the SAI organization.  She is committed to continuous musical growth through better educational opportunities.  Her vision is to musically educate women of all ages, enabling them to experience the joy of excellent singing.

The Woodlands Show Chorus members wholeheartedly buy in to her theory, because this group of tenacious, goal-driven women singers travel from many areas of south Texas every Monday evening to sing for Betty, because they believe in the joy of hard work and dedication to their craft. Master Director Clipman asserts that “chorus rehearsal is ideally a night of joy and accomplishment. The common thread that motivates members to join Sweet Adelines is that they love to sing.  As a chorus director, it’s a privilege to train women who really want to be at rehearsal and who have a zest for knowledge and musical growth. It IS fun to sing, and it’s even more fun to sing extremely well.”

TWSC is extremely grateful to their friends, family and community and will hold a FREE HOLIDAY GIVE-BACK PERFORMANCE on December 12 this year to thank their supporters and announce their plans to reciprocate that support as a celebration of their tenth year.  The performance includes free homemade treats, sparkling cider and door prizes and will be held in their awesome rehearsal hall at the First Presbyterian Church of Conroe Family Life Center, 2727 N. Loop 336 W, Conroe, 77304, from 7-9 pm.

TWSC has performed in and around the Conroe and The Woodlands areas including performances at the Greenwood Forest Women’s Club in Champion Forest, April Sound Ladies Association Luncheon in Conroe, for the International Friends Association, the Mobile-Exxon Retirees, Conroe Stars and Stripes Celebration in downtown Conroe, and the opening act for the prestigious Houston Symphony’s July 3rd Star-Spangled Salute at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.  They presented a Holiday Show last November, 2021 and another show in July of this year.  In addition to their upcoming FREE December 12 friends and family performance, their future plans include performances at the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance Fall Festival on November 5 in downtown Conroe and the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance Spring Art Festival, March 18, 2023, in Historic Downtown Conroe.

Visitors and interested women singers are welcome at rehearsals each Monday evening from 7-10 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Conroe. More information is available by emailing info@thewoodlandsshowchorus.org and visiting their website at www.thewoodlandsshowchorus.org.
