CFISD Seeks Bus Buddy Volunteers to Help Young Riders Find Their Way Home
For a young student, the first bus ride home can feel like a big adventure. There are new classmates, unfamiliar streets and the important task of remembering exactly where to get off.
Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District is asking community members to make that experience a little easier by volunteering for the 2026 CFISD Bus Buddy program. Volunteers will accompany elementary students on their afternoon bus routes during the first two days of school, Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13.
The annual back-to-school volunteer program gives young and first-time bus riders an extra layer of support while they learn their new routines. For parents, it can also provide reassurance that another caring adult is helping students navigate one of the busiest parts of the first school day.
What Does a CFISD Bus Buddy Do?
Bus Buddies report to an elementary campus before afternoon dismissal and receive instructions and a bus assignment from school staff. They then ride the assigned bus route and help ensure students exit at the correct stops.
The role is simple, but its impact can be meaningful. A calm voice, a friendly face and a little extra attention can help a nervous child feel more comfortable during an unfamiliar ride home.
“It’s such a simple way to show support and be part of a student’s positive first-day experience,” CFISD Director of Transportation Dr. Kayne Smith said during last year’s Bus Buddy volunteer effort. “Bus Buddies really ease the nerves of both kids and parents as they start the school year.”
Volunteers may serve on August 12, August 13 or both days. Every effort will be made to place participants at their preferred CFISD elementary campus.
Some campuses may need volunteers to complete a “double route,” meaning the Bus Buddy will assist with more than one bus trip. Volunteers should be prepared to follow the campus instructions provided with their assignment.
A Small Commitment That Supports CFISD Families
The beginning of a school year brings a major shift in routine for students, parents, teachers, campus employees and transportation staff. Thousands of children are learning new classrooms, schedules, pickup procedures and bus routes at the same time.
Bus Buddies provide additional assistance during those first afternoons, when younger students may still be learning bus numbers, landmarks and neighborhood stops.
“You don’t need special skills to volunteer—just a heart for kids and a couple hours to spare,” the district shared during the 2025 program.
Community members, retirees, parents, local business representatives, organization members and district employees may participate. The registration form asks volunteers to identify whether their service is connected to a business, organization or CFISD department, though an affiliation is not required.
“It’s a great way for community members—whether you’re a retiree, business owner, or neighbor—to show up for kids in a meaningful and memorable way,” Smith said during last year’s initiative.
For volunteers, the experience can offer a firsthand look at the excitement—and occasional uncertainty—that accompanies the first days of school. For students, the presence of a Bus Buddy can turn a potentially overwhelming ride into a more welcoming introduction to the school bus routine.
How to Volunteer as a CFISD Bus Buddy
Those interested in participating must complete the 2026 Bus Buddy registration form and provide their name, cell phone number, email address, available date or dates and preferred elementary school.
Volunteers should also note the following:
- Participants may volunteer on Wednesday, August 12; Thursday, August 13; or both days.
- Campus placement requests will be accommodated when possible.
- Some schools may assign volunteers to more than one route.
- Volunteers must bring a valid photo ID when checking in at the campus.
- Additional instructions and assignment information will be provided by CFISD or campus staff.
“We’re grateful to all of our returning and new Bus Buddies,” Smith said during the previous year’s volunteer drive. “Your support gives our students the confidence to step onto that bus and know someone is looking out for them.”

Why the First Bus Ride Matters
For adults, riding the bus may seem like a routine part of the school day. For a kindergartner, first grader or student riding independently for the first time, it can be one of the day’s biggest moments.
Bus Buddies help bridge the space between the classroom and home by offering encouragement and helping children recognize when their stop is approaching. That support can build confidence early and make the next day’s ride feel more familiar.
The program also reflects the larger partnership between CFISD schools and the communities they serve. It gives residents a practical way to support local students without requiring a long-term volunteer commitment.
As CFISD families prepare for another school year, the district is encouraging community members to consider spending one or both afternoons helping its youngest riders begin their new routines with confidence.
