Celebrate the Holidays at The Brookwood Community’s Annual Christmas Open House in Brookshire

November 18 2024

The Brookwood Community in Brookshire is gearing up for its highly anticipated Christmas Open House on December 6th and 7th. This two-day festive event offers visitors a chance to enjoy holiday shopping, delicious food, live entertainment, and a variety of fun activities, all while supporting a meaningful cause. The celebration is made even more special by the stunning Brookwood-grown poinsettias, a signature product of the community's horticultural program.

Each year, Brookwood’s horticulture enterprise produces approximately 50,000 vibrant poinsettias, all grown by adults with disabilities, known as Citizens, who work in the community's programs. These beautiful plants have become a holiday tradition for many, and the Christmas Open House provides the perfect opportunity to purchase these stunning flowers while supporting the work of the Citizens who nurture them. The poinsettias are available for sale throughout the event, adding a festive touch to visitors’ homes and holiday celebrations.

A Festive Experience for the Whole Family

The Christmas Open House offers something for everyone, with a variety of activities designed to bring joy and holiday cheer to visitors of all ages. From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both days, the Brookwood Gift & Garden Center will be open for shopping, showcasing hand-crafted items made by the Citizens, including unique holiday décor, gifts, and more. This is a great opportunity to find one-of-a-kind presents for loved ones, all while supporting the talents and hard work of the Brookwood residents.

One of the event's highlights is the Citizen Christmas Program, which takes place at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM each day. The program features an original play performed by the Citizens, accompanied by holiday music from the Brookwood Handbell Ensemble. This heartwarming performance is sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

For those looking to explore the Brookwood campus, campus bus tours are available at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM, offering a guided tour of the 485-acre campus. Maps for self-guided walking tours are also provided for visitors who prefer to explore on their own.

Dining and More Holiday Fun

The award-winning Brookwood Café will be serving a delicious buffet lunch from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM each day. The meal is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with family-style seating, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal with loved ones.

Another fun activity to enjoy at the Christmas Open House is the Pictures in the Poinsettias photo opportunity. Visitors can have their family photo taken in front of a stunning backdrop of Brookwood’s signature poinsettias, with volunteers available to help capture the perfect shot.

Supporting a Community with Purpose

The Brookwood Community has been providing meaningful work and a sense of belonging to adults with disabilities since its founding in 1983. Today, more than 200 Citizens work in a variety of enterprises on the Brookwood campus, including horticulture, the café, and other community-focused programs. The Christmas Open House is a significant fundraiser for the community, helping to support the continued success of these programs and provide valuable resources for the adults with disabilities who call Brookwood home.

Whether you’re looking to find the perfect holiday gift, enjoy a delicious meal, or take in a heartwarming performance, the Christmas Open House at The Brookwood Community offers an experience like no other. Join in the holiday festivities while supporting a truly unique community that provides adults with disabilities the opportunity to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.
