TED Talks for Teens: African American History Month
Monday, February 13 @ 4:30 PM | Lone Star College - Tomball Community Library
Celebrate African American History Month by watching influential TED Talks by Black speakers. There will be a chance for discussion after each video. These short videos featuring musicians, poets, and community leaders are inspiring and uplifting. We'll have comfy seating, popcorn, and coloring sheets, as well as a variety of books to check out. Ages 12-21 welcome.
A Loving Vision: Celebrating the Life of Dr. Patricia Bath

Join us for our African American History Celebration as we honor Dr. Patricia Bath's Loving Vision with a Valentine's Day Party! We love Dr. Bath for all the good she did during her life. Dr. Patricia Bath was an amazing woman and doctor. She took on blindness and protected and restored the vision of people around the world! We will kick off our Loving Vision Valentine's Day Party at 10:00 with a special story time. There will be fun activities for families afterward. Houston CyFair Lion's Club will provide free vision screenings for children, there will also be crafts, games, and a special Valentine's Day goodie bag (while supplies last) for children provided by the Friends of the Fairbanks Branch Library. Please note that this program is for children ages 18 month-5 years and their caregiver(s).
50+ Bus Trip - Black Cowboy Museum & Rosenberg Railroad Museum

Time for a fun trip to Rosenberg, Texas! We will leave the library at 8:30 am and travel to the Black Cowboy Museum. After exploring the museum, we will have lunch at the Ol Railroad Cafe. After lunch, we will travel to the Rosenberg Railroad Museum before returning to Tomball. Admission to Black Cowboy Museum: Adults $10.00, Seniors (62+) $7.00. Admission to Rosenberg Railroad Museum: Adults $9.00, Seniors $7.00. If you have any questions, please email Susan Howard.
Discover: Alma's Art

Art makes our world a beautiful place, don't you think? Join us as we read Alma's Art by Roda Ahmed and learn about American artist Alma Thomas, the first Black woman to have her art featured in the White House Collection. We'll honor her impact on art by recreating her bold, colorful style in collage form. This program is a part of HCPL's African American History Month celebration.
This program is for kids ages 4-7 and their parent/guardian. Required registration begins a week prior. Only the participating child needs to be registered. For more information, call the library at 832-559-4235.
A Taste of Soul Food & History

Movie Night: Celebrating African American History Month

Art in the African American Community

Throughout the month of February, Maud Marks Library will celebrate African American History musical and artistic culture in the African American community. Join us on Saturday, February 18 at 2 PM for a special program by Sean Gaskell. He will be playing the musical instrument, Kora. He will discuss the history of the Kora, how it is built, who typically plays it and the types of events it is often utilized at. African crafts for kids and refreshments will also be available after the program.
