Austin Airport South Terminal Closing: Allegiant and Frontier Flights Move to Barbara Jordan Terminal at AUS April 1, 2026

Austin  /  Austin
March 03 2026

Travelers flying through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) will soon notice a significant change that reflects the rapid growth of air travel in Central Texas.

Beginning April 1, 2026, Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines flights will operate exclusively from the Barbara Jordan Terminal, marking the official closure of the airport’s South Terminal after its final day of operations on March 31, 2026.

For passengers, the transition means something simple: same airlines, same flights — just one terminal. But behind the scenes, the move represents an important step in Austin’s long-term airport expansion plans designed to keep pace with one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States.

Why the AUS South Terminal Is Closing

The closure of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport South Terminal is tied directly to a major infrastructure project that will reshape the airport’s future.

After operations cease, the South Terminal structure will be permanently removed to make way for the New Midfield Taxiways Project, a key component of the airport’s broader Journey With AUS expansion program.

The midfield taxiways are considered an “enabling project,” meaning they must be completed before other large improvements can move forward. These improvements include plans for a future Concourse B and a connecting passenger tunnel, projects intended to expand gate capacity and improve connectivity across the airfield.

As passenger traffic in Austin continues to rise, airport leaders say these upgrades will help Austin-Bergstrom International Airport better handle growing travel demand across Central Texas while improving efficiency for airlines and travelers alike.

What Travelers Should Expect at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Starting April 1, 2026, travelers flying Allegiant or Frontier from Austin should go directly to the Barbara Jordan Terminal for check-in, security screening, and departure.

The change means that all commercial airlines operating at AUS will now be located in a single terminal, creating a more streamlined airport experience for passengers.

Airport officials say consolidating airlines under one roof should make navigating the airport easier for many travelers, especially those connecting between airlines or traveling with groups.

Key transition dates include:

  • March 31, 2026 – Final day of South Terminal operations
  • April 1, 2026 – South Terminal officially closes
  • April 1, 2026 – Allegiant and Frontier begin operating from the Barbara Jordan Terminal

Passengers traveling near the transition period are encouraged to double-check their flight information and terminal location before arriving at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Parking and Shuttle Information During the Transition

Airport officials say careful planning is in place to ensure a smooth transition for travelers who may park at the South Terminal shortly before its closure.

Passengers who depart from the South Terminal on or before March 31 but return after April 1 will arrive back at the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

To help those travelers reach their vehicles, the ABIA parking shuttle connecting the Barbara Jordan Terminal and the South Terminal parking lot will continue operating until the lot has been fully vacated.

Airport leaders say additional parking guidance and updates will be shared as the closure date approaches to help travelers plan ahead.

Looking Back at the AUS South Terminal

The Austin airport South Terminal opened on April 13, 2017, offering an alternative terminal designed to accommodate low-cost carriers like Allegiant and Frontier. Over nearly a decade, the facility served millions of passengers traveling to and from Central Texas.

As Austin-Bergstrom International Airport prepares for its next phase of growth, the terminal’s removal will make room for infrastructure that supports the airport’s long-term expansion.

The New Midfield Taxiways Project, along with the planned Concourse B expansion, represents one of the most significant investments in the airport’s future and is intended to improve airfield operations and passenger capacity for years to come.

What Happens Next for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

As the Journey With AUS expansion program continues, travelers can expect additional projects designed to accommodate Austin’s population growth and increasing flight demand.

In the immediate term, the biggest change for travelers will simply be checking in at the Barbara Jordan Terminal instead of the South Terminal starting April 1.

Airport officials say updates, frequently asked questions, and travel guidance will continue to be posted on the official AUS website as the transition approaches.

As the airport prepares to close one chapter and begin another, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport leaders say the improvements underway will help the airport better serve residents, visitors, and the broader Central Texas community for years to come.
