Westlake Junior Fire Academy 2025 Wraps with Lifesaving Lessons and Unforgettable Moments

July 28 2025

For 16 teens in the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department service area, this summer brought a week they’ll never forget. The 5th Annual Westlake Junior Fire Academy Camp, held July 21–25, 2025, was more than a camp—it was a firsthand look at what it takes to serve and protect the community.

From the first day, campers stepped into the boots of real-life first responders, learning firefighting basics, medical response skills, and the importance of teamwork under pressure. The week was packed with unique experiences rarely accessible to the public, leaving a lasting impression on both participants and instructors.

A Week of Firsts and Lasting Impact

One highlight came when Memorial Hermann Life Flight landed a medical helicopter on-site, giving campers a dramatic front-row view of emergency air transport in action. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office Arson and Hazmat teams introduced campers to fire investigation techniques and hazardous materials response, opening their eyes to the complexity of emergency services beyond the firehouse.

A visit to WestCom 911, the emergency dispatch center, allowed campers to see how 911 calls are processed and how rapid-response coordination saves lives every day. Later in the week, hands-on CPR and first aid training ensured campers left with skills they can use for a lifetime.

Of course, no summer camp would be complete without some fun—ending with a water day celebration to beat the Texas heat and mark all that was accomplished during the week.

Brian Havran, Secretary of Harris County ESD 47, praised the camp’s impact on young people in the community, saying, “This camp has become THE destination for youths during the summer months. A huge thanks to Captain Driver and the whole Westlake team for spending quality time with the youngsters and providing them with an experience that they can't get at school or anywhere else.”

Building the Next Generation of First Responders

The camp wasn’t just about firefighting—it focused on confidence, teamwork, and leadership. For some, it sparked a career interest; for others, it instilled a deeper respect for those who keep communities safe.

Organizers also credited the week’s success to community partners, including Raising Cane’s, Panda Express, Chick-fil-A Katy Green, and Witt Pit BBQ & Catering, who provided meals and snacks for campers and volunteers alike.

Looking Ahead to 2026

The success of this year’s camp is already building excitement for next summer. Families interested in next year’s camp are encouraged to watch for registration announcements early next summer.

Until then, the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department extends gratitude to all who made the camp possible and congratulates the 2025 class of junior firefighters for a week of dedication, learning, and fun.
