The callers falsely identify themselves as sheriff’s office sergeants or other employees and claim that an inmate can be released after a large payment is made. How the Waller County jail release scam works

Victims are then instructed to send money in $500 increments through a barcode or QR code described as a “Safe Pay” system. Once the payment is completed, the money may be difficult or impossible to recover.

However, residents should not assume that a caller is legitimate simply because the person provides names, titles or details about an inmate.
