Voices from the Past: An Enchanting Journey into History with Hope Shiver

January 04 2024

This February, prepare for an entrancing journey into history, told through the powerful lens of award-winning performer and writer Hope Shiver. Gifted with an uncanny ability to illuminate the past, Shiver presents "Voices from the Past," free performances for children that recite the riveting tale of the famous abolitionist Sojourner Truth. Using a captivating blend of story and song, Hope Shiver will transform community centers into time machines, propelling young minds back to critical moments in American history.

Brought to you by Cypress Creek FACE, the first performance takes flight on February 10 at the Mangum-Howell Community Center in Houston, while the second unfolds on February 17 at the George H.W. Bush Community Center in Spring. Through this historical narrative, children will experience the abolitionist movement, the women's movement, the Civil War, and President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. All these events will be brought to life by Sojourner's own songs and speeches, enriched by Shiver's skilled performance.

In partnership with Young Audiences of Houston, the goal of these performances is two-fold. While children are promised an entertaining spectacle, the shows also aim to educate them about the historical significance of African American spirituals. A blend of entertainment and education, these performances are designed to evoke curiosity, stir emotions and ignite a passion for history in the hearts of young audiences.

Tickets for the performances are absolutely free. Simply reserve your free ticket in advance here. This is a unique chance for your children to experience history firsthand through the dramatic storytelling prowess of Hope Shiver. Be there to witness the past come alive in the most memorable way possible—a performance you won't forget.
