Urinetown, The Musical Opens at Local Stageworks Theatre March 31

March 29 2023

Stageworks Theatre, a local theatre company in the Cy-Fair region, is gearing up for opening night of a unique musical entitled "URINETOWN".

From March 31 - April 23, 2023, cast and crew will delight audiences with this sidesplitting sendup of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

URINETOWN is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, environmental collapse, privatization of natural resources, bureaucracy, municipal politics, and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms.

Produced on Broadway in September 2001 by the Araca Group and Dodger Theatricals in association with TheaterDreams, Inc., and Lauren Mitchell, URINETOWN is the winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards. Music and Lyrics for URINETOWN were written by Mark Hollmann, and the book and lyrics by Greg Kotis.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the "comedic romp" into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

This production will take place at Garza Mainstage, located at 10760 Grant Road in Houston, Texas. Tickets cost $27.00 - $39.75 and can be purchased ahead online or at the box office. The show is rated PG-13. Parental guidance suggested for ages 13 and below due to some humorous adult innuendos, and mild profanity.  For specific details, email Stageworks Theatre's artistic director.
