Harris County Sheriff's Office Launches 24/7 Online Tool to Help Residents Locate Towed Vehicles
In a move to ease frustration and reduce the time it takes to track down a towed vehicle, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office has officially launched a new online tool designed to help residents quickly find and retrieve their vehicles. The platform, FindMyTowedCar.org, went live on Monday, November 3, 2025, and is now available for public use.
The website offers a user-friendly way for drivers to determine the location of their vehicle following a tow — whether it was removed from a crash scene, private property, or repossessed — in any unincorporated area of Harris County. Once online, users can simply select “Harris County” from the list of participating jurisdictions and enter their license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), or the date and approximate location where the car was towed.
How It Works
- Visit FindMyTowedCar.org
- Select Harris County
- Input your license plate, VIN, or tow details
Receive instant access to the vehicle’s storage location, including:
- Tow company name
- Address and phone number
- Approximate storage and administrative fees

Data is typically available within two hours of the tow, and listings are automatically removed once a vehicle is released from the storage lot. The tool provides 24/7 access, making it particularly helpful after hours or on weekends when traditional phone inquiries may be delayed.
Designed With Community in Mind
This digital improvement is especially welcome in a large metro area like Harris County, which spans over 1,700 square miles and is home to more than 4.7 million residents. Many drivers have experienced the stress of not knowing where their vehicle was taken after being towed, often leading to hours of searching and multiple phone calls. This new system is a direct response to that common challenge.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which oversees the towing and vehicle storage industry in Texas, reports hundreds of thousands of non-consent tows occur across the state each year — many of which originate in densely populated counties like Harris.
According to TDLR, non-consent tows (tows that happen without the vehicle owner’s immediate request or knowledge, such as from private lots or accident scenes) are highly regulated. Yet, delays in locating vehicles are still common due to fragmented communication between law enforcement, towing operators, and vehicle storage facilities.
FindMyTowedCar.org helps eliminate the guesswork — ensuring transparency and faster recovery. The platform also aligns with similar efforts across major cities in Texas, where online vehicle location databases have already proven to be effective public service tools.

Local Impact and Availability
Importantly, the service currently applies only to unincorporated areas of Harris County — meaning locations outside the city limits of Houston and other municipalities. If your vehicle was towed from within a city like Houston, you’ll need to check with that city’s local towing database or contact their police non-emergency line.
For unincorporated areas, this centralized tool could help thousands of residents each year. Whether your vehicle was towed from an apartment complex, private parking lot, or after a traffic incident, this tool brings relief and answers with just a few clicks.
