Tomball ISD to Launch Texas’ First Virtual Cybersecurity Academy in Fall 2027, Offering Free College Degree Pathway for High School Students

October 14 2026

For families in Tomball and across Texas, the path from high school to college could soon look very different. Tomball Independent School District (Tomball ISD) is launching the Tomball Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity in fall 2027, giving students the opportunity to graduate from high school with both a diploma and an associate degree, without the cost of college tuition.

The four-year, fully online program, approved by the Tomball ISD Board of Trustees in October 2026, is being developed in partnership with Sam Houston State University’s Polytechnic College (SamPoly). Described by the district as the first virtual academy of its kind in Texas, the program will introduce students to cybersecurity education while allowing them to earn up to 60 college credit hours at no cost to participating families.

For parents weighing the rising cost of higher education and students interested in technology careers, the academy offers an alternative to the traditional high school experience. Although the program is being developed by Tomball ISD, current eighth-grade students across Texas who are part of the Class of 2031 will be eligible to apply, extending the opportunity well beyond the Tomball community.

How the Tomball Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity Will Work

The Tomball Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity is designed as a four-year early college program that combines high school coursework with college-level cybersecurity education through a fully virtual learning environment.

Students who successfully complete the program will have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, including up to 60 college credit hours, alongside their high school diploma. The college coursework is intended to help students build technical knowledge, prepare for cybersecurity careers and establish a foundation for continued education toward a bachelor's degree.

Unlike a traditional dual-credit program in which students take individual college courses alongside their high school classes, the academy is being designed as a coordinated academic pathway connecting secondary education with a college degree.

The virtual format also makes the program accessible to eligible students who may live outside Tomball ISD's geographic boundaries, potentially opening doors for families who otherwise would not have access to a specialized cybersecurity education program nearby.

“In Tomball ISD, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover their passion and find their path to success,” said Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, Superintendent of Schools. “Through our partnership with SamPoly, we are proud to launch the first-of-its-kind virtual cybersecurity academy in Texas, creating an innovative opportunity for students to explore an in-demand career field, earn college credit at no cost and build a strong foundation for their future. This is what it means to be a Destination District — opening doors, expanding opportunities and empowering our students to dream big and achieve more.”

Why Cybersecurity Education Matters for Texas Students

Cybersecurity has become an increasingly important part of everyday life, from protecting personal banking information and medical records to securing school networks, business systems and public infrastructure.

As organizations rely more heavily on digital technology, they also need professionals who understand how to identify security vulnerabilities, protect sensitive information and respond to cyber threats.

For students in Tomball, northwest Harris County, Montgomery County and throughout the Greater Houston area, the new academy could provide an earlier introduction to a career field that spans industries including healthcare, energy, finance, government and technology.

The partnership with SamPoly is intended to connect classroom learning with the practical skills and credentials students may need as they enter college or begin exploring the workforce.

“At Sam Houston State University’s Polytechnic College, we believe partnerships like the one we are building with Tomball ISD represent the future of workforce-aligned higher education,” said Jonathan Thomas, Assistant Vice President of Industry Partnerships & Workforce Pathways. “By connecting high school coursework with college-level cybersecurity education, we are creating an innovative virtual pathway that allows students to earn college credit, develop industry-relevant skills, and work toward meaningful credentials before graduating from high school. This partnership is about more than accelerating educational attainment; it is about removing barriers to higher education, preparing students for high-demand careers, and establishing a seamless pathway from high school to an associate degree and ultimately a bachelor’s degree. We are excited to partner with Tomball ISD to expand opportunities for students and strengthen the cybersecurity workforce of tomorrow.”

While completing the academy would not guarantee employment in cybersecurity, students who successfully earn their associate degree could enter their next stage of education with substantial college coursework already completed.

For families, that could mean fewer remaining courses toward certain bachelor's degree pathways, depending on the receiving institution's transfer policies and degree requirements.

Sam Houston State University's Polytechnic College Brings Workforce-Focused Education to the Partnership

The collaboration builds on Sam Houston State University's longstanding emphasis on accessible education and career preparation.

Founded more than 145 years ago, Sam Houston State University has a history of serving students from a wide range of backgrounds, including first-generation college students. The institution's Polytechnic College traces its roots to the Josey School, established after World War II to help returning military service members gain practical education and workforce skills.

Today, SamPoly continues that mission through flexible, career-focused programs designed to prepare students for high-demand industries while preserving opportunities to pursue four-year degrees.

Its emphasis on Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways makes the college a natural partner for Tomball ISD's proposed virtual cybersecurity program, which aims to connect high school learning with college credentials and workforce preparation.

Tomball ISD Continues Expanding Educational Opportunities Beyond Traditional Classrooms

The virtual academy also represents another step in Tomball ISD's efforts to provide students with specialized educational opportunities as the surrounding community continues to grow.

Founded in 1908, Tomball ISD serves more than 23,300 students across 26 campuses within an 83-square-mile area spanning northwest Harris County and southwest Montgomery County, approximately 30 miles from downtown Houston.

The district's educational mission emphasizes innovative, individually rigorous and personally valuable learning experiences, supported by partnerships with families, businesses and the broader community.

By introducing a statewide virtual cybersecurity academy, Tomball ISD is expanding that approach beyond its physical campuses and offering an academic option for students whose interests may be better served through a specialized online program.

The academy also reflects a broader shift toward early college and career-focused education, in which students can begin working toward postsecondary credentials before completing high school.

Tomball Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity Applications Open October 26, 2026

Families interested in the inaugural fall 2027 cohort should pay close attention to the academy's upcoming application dates.

The admissions process will follow a schedule aligned with Tomball ISD's Early College High School (ECHS) application procedures.

Free Virtual Information Sessions Scheduled for October 21 and 23

Before applications open, Tomball ISD will host three virtual information sessions to help families learn more about the academy, its academic structure and the opportunities available to participating students.

All three sessions will take place online through Microsoft Teams.

For families considering the academy, these sessions offer an opportunity to learn about the expectations of a fully online high school program and better understand how the college coursework will fit into a student's four-year educational plan.

What Families Should Know Before the Fall 2027 Launch

With the first application window approaching, families of current eighth graders may want to begin discussing whether a virtual, career-focused academic environment would be a good fit for their student.

The program's combination of online learning, cybersecurity specialization and college-level coursework could appeal to students who are comfortable with independent learning and already have an interest in computers, technology or digital security.

However, the district has not yet released all of the program's admissions criteria or academic requirements. Details about student selection, enrollment limits and day-to-day expectations are expected as implementation progresses.

For Tomball ISD, the academy marks a new approach to preparing students for life after graduation. For families throughout Texas, it introduces the possibility of completing high school with a college degree already in hand, potentially changing how students approach the transition into higher education.
