Tomball ISD Biology Teacher Cristina Monroe Named Region 4 Teacher of the Year Finalist
A Tomball ISD biology teacher whose career has centered on helping students build curiosity, confidence and a lasting connection to learning is now being recognized among the Houston region’s top educators.
Cristina Monroe, a biology teacher at Tomball Star Academy, has been named one of five finalists for the 2027 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year. Her selection brings regional attention to the work happening inside Tomball classrooms and to the teachers who help students grow one lesson, question and small victory at a time.
Monroe was selected from educators representing the 46 school districts served by Region 4 Education Service Center. She is one of 10 finalists overall, including five elementary teachers and five secondary teachers recognized for their classroom instruction, leadership and commitment to student success.
For Tomball ISD families, the honor is also a reminder that the educators guiding local students are making an impact that reaches beyond campus walls.
A 15-Year Career Built Around Student Growth
Monroe has worked in education for 15 years, including the past decade in Tomball ISD. Throughout her career, she has focused on engaging, student-centered instruction designed to help young people feel capable, curious and invested in their own learning.
When asked why she chose education, Monroe described a profession that provides purpose even when its influence cannot always be measured immediately.
“Education is never boring. The impact of a teacher cannot be measured. I feel a sense of purpose waking up every day and going to work,” Monroe said.
She acknowledged that teaching can sometimes feel like a profession in which the full results are not visible until years later. Still, she said the daily growth she witnesses gives the work its meaning.
“We celebrate every step and small win as we go. I get to be a part of their journey, and that in itself is the most rewarding and special part of my job,” Monroe said.
That perspective reflects the qualities the Region 4 Teacher of the Year program is designed to recognize: excellence in the classroom, meaningful relationships with students and lasting contributions to schools and communities.
Why the Monroe Family Chose Tomball ISD
Monroe’s connection to Tomball ISD began through her husband, David Monroe, a computer science teacher at Tomball Memorial High School. The couple was living in Katy when he first began commuting to Tomball.
When the family later decided where to establish roots, Monroe said the choice was clear.
“At the end of that year when it was time to decide where we would settle down, there was no question that it was Tomball,” Monroe said. “Tomball ISD is the first time I heard people say, ‘I love my job,’ and I couldn't agree more.”
For Monroe, that sense of connection extended beyond her own classroom. She said the commitment of other Tomball ISD teachers and staff has continually encouraged her to keep doing what is best for students.
“I have always said that Tomball ISD has the highest concentration of teachers that SHOW UP for the students that truly care about doing a good job,” Monroe said.
She also noted that Tomball ISD is the district she trusts to educate her own children, not only academically, but as developing individuals.
Recognition That Reaches Beyond the Classroom
Before becoming a Region 4 finalist, Monroe was named Tomball ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. She described the district recognition as validating because it reflected the influence she hoped to have on students, colleagues and the broader community.
Her advancement to the regional level now places her among educators representing districts throughout the Region 4 service area, which includes a large portion of the Houston metropolitan region.
The recognition also highlights Tomball Star Academy, where Monroe teaches biology. The campus is one of 26 schools operated by Tomball ISD, a district serving more than 23,300 students across 83 square miles in northwest Harris County and southwest Montgomery County.
What Happens Next for the Region 4 Finalists
The 2027 Region 4 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year will be announced during a special ceremony on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The two regional winners will advance to the Texas Teacher of the Year program, which recognizes the state’s leading elementary and secondary educators.
