The Woodlands Show Chorus Sports Three New Medals, Preps for Upcoming Local Concert
They may not have diamonds on the soles of their shoes, but The Woodland Show Chorus members sport no less than three ribbons with medals around their necks! The chorus, along with 16 of it’s Region 10, Sweet Adelines International sister choruses, competed on March 25 at the Hilton Houston North Hotel! TWSC won first-place, medium size chorus and first place overall, which added two medals to their ninth-place medal earned at the Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition held in Phoenix last September.
Keturah Moller, Elizabeth McCurdy, Denise Tazumi and Laurie Parkinson (all from this area) of Momentum Quartet are actually wearing an additional medal for placing third out of the 14 quartets in this regional competition. TWSC was also well represented by Mama Made Me Duet Quartet, who also received an additional fifth place medal. Two other TWSC quartets, New Edition Quartet (6th place) and Just Jammin’ Quartet (9th place) ensured that all of the TWSC quartets scored a top ten rating. This unique competition resulted in some chorus members carrying even more medals, because they are also dual members with sister chorus, Houston Horizon Chorus, who placed second.
As Master Director and world-renowned coach, Betty Clipman, said this week, “We are still flying high after our competition weekend together. I’m very proud of the fact that we significantly improved in all four categories over our performance in Phoenix (international competition). We worked for it and it paid off.” Preparation for 2024 international competition began with their first rehearsal following regional competition this past Monday. The evaluation of their competition performance, introduction of new music and, of course, music and performance education with harmonic singing was the evening’s agenda.
This regional competition win qualifies the chorus to compete again internationally at the Sweet Adeline International Convention and Competition to be held in Kansas City, Mo, October 28 - November 2, 2024. The next year and a half will be filled with performances, rehearsals and retreats. As a matter of fact, the chorus will be giving up its April 10th rehearsal in lieu of a performance on April 11th for the National Barbershop Quartet Day event at 7:00 pm held at Pines Presbyterian Church, located at 12751 Kimberley, Houston, TX 77024, and hosted by sister chorus, Houston Horizon Chorus. TWSC will be performing with other Barbershop choruses and quartets in the area. Guests are welcome.
Of course, this is a time of growth for the chorus with two new members competing and several more who will be performing and competing over the next couple of years. The chorus continues recruiting members and will host Open Auditions May 8 and 15. The chorus welcomes all female singers to visit and plan an audition at any rehearsal, which are held every Monday from 7:00-10:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Conroe.
