For shoppers around Cinco Ranch and Katy, a familiar storefront on South Fry Road is about to begin a new chapter — and for independent shop owners, the opening represents something more than another retail destination.

The Collective Boutiques is scheduled to soft open Saturday, Sept. 5, at 6729 South Fry Road in Katy, the former home of Painted Tree Boutiques. The company currently lists the location as its Cinco Ranch (Houston), Texas store, with a grand opening planned for Oct. 3.

The concept brings numerous independently owned boutiques together inside one professionally operated store, allowing shoppers to browse clothing, gifts, jewelry, home décor, handmade goods and other merchandise from different small businesses during a single visit.

For the surrounding Cinco Ranch and Katy community, that means the return of a boutique marketplace to a retail space many residents already know — but under an entirely separate company and ownership structure.

A New Business Takes Over a Familiar Katy Retail Space

The Collective Boutiques emerged following the abrupt nationwide closure of Painted Tree Boutiques in April 2026, which forced vendors at locations across the country to quickly remove merchandise and find new places to sell their products.

Painted Tree had operated dozens of locations nationwide before ceasing operations April 14, leaving independent vendors who had invested in individual retail spaces facing an uncertain next step.

The Collective Boutiques is a new and separate business, although its model may feel familiar to shoppers who previously visited Painted Tree locations.

Rather than operating as a traditional store carrying merchandise purchased by one retailer, The Collective Boutiques provides individual spaces to independent business owners, makers and vendors. Each shop owner designs and stocks his or her own boutique while The Collective handles many of the daily responsibilities associated with operating the larger store.

The company describes its approach simply as “boutiques, not booths,” with each space intended to look and feel like an individual shop inside the larger marketplace.

The business has already begun opening locations in former Painted Tree spaces around the country, including stores elsewhere in Texas.

How The Collective Boutiques Works for Local Small Businesses

For entrepreneurs, the model is designed to provide a brick-and-mortar retail presence without requiring each business owner to personally staff a storefront every day.

The Collective provides the store space, employees, checkout system, payment processing and marketing. Its staff opens and operates the main store, assists customers, processes purchases and handles returns, while individual boutique owners are responsible for stocking merchandise and maintaining their displays.

According to the company, participating shop owners pay monthly rent for their space along with a flat 10% commission on gross sales. Sales are settled monthly, with business owners receiving statements showing gross sales, commission, rent and net proceeds.

The arrangement can be particularly useful for small-business owners who sell online, at markets or through pop-up events but want a permanent physical location without the staffing and overhead associated with operating an entire standalone store.

Boutique owners can monitor sales and inventory through a shop owner portal, while The Collective handles point-of-sale operations, store staffing, sales-tax collection and remittance, security in common areas and broader store marketing.

The company says shop owners typically do not have to remain at the store during business hours and can instead visit as needed to restock merchandise and refresh their space.

What Shoppers Can Expect Inside The Collective Boutiques in Cinco Ranch

The appeal for customers is variety.

Instead of shopping one retailer's inventory, visitors can walk through a collection of separately curated boutiques, each operated by a different independent seller.

Similar marketplace locations commonly feature women's apparel, jewelry, accessories, home décor, candles, specialty gifts, handmade products, vintage finds and other merchandise that can vary considerably from one boutique to the next.

That creates an experience that can change regularly as individual shop owners rotate merchandise, introduce seasonal collections or bring in new products.

It also gives Katy and Cinco Ranch shoppers another way to support small businesses without traveling between multiple standalone stores.

For local entrepreneurs, every purchase made inside one of those spaces represents a sale for the independent business behind it.

From Painted Tree Closure to a Second Chance for Vendors

The circumstances surrounding The Collective Boutiques' expansion add another layer to the Cinco Ranch opening.

Painted Tree's sudden closure earlier this year disrupted a network of independent vendors nationwide. At its Highland Village location in North Texas, for example, vendors were given only a short window to retrieve their inventory when operations ended April 14.

The Collective Boutiques subsequently began pursuing many of those former retail locations, positioning itself as a new home for independent shop owners who still wanted access to the shared-marketplace model.

Its website says the company is focused on bringing independent shop owners together under one professionally managed roof, while its hiring materials describe the mission as helping small-business owners succeed.

That makes the South Fry Road opening notable not only because another store is arriving, but because a retail concept that supported numerous individual businesses is returning to the same space.

Cinco Ranch Soft Opening Is Sept. 5

Vendor move-ins for the Cinco Ranch store began Aug. 26, according to The Collective Boutiques' published opening schedule.

The soft opening is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, followed by a grand opening Oct. 3.

The company notes that opening schedules can be affected by permitting, inspections, construction and other factors, but its current location page continues to list Sept. 5 as the Cinco Ranch soft opening date and Oct. 3 as the grand opening.

Why the Opening Matters for Cinco Ranch and Katy

Retail openings often get measured by square footage, merchandise or another name appearing on a shopping-center sign.

This one has a more personal component.

Behind many of the displays will be individual entrepreneurs — people building clothing brands, making products, selling home décor, creating gifts or turning side businesses into something larger.

For shoppers, The Collective Boutiques adds another destination along the busy South Fry Road corridor and restores activity to a storefront left vacant when Painted Tree closed.

For shop owners, it offers something increasingly difficult for small retailers to secure on their own: a physical storefront, professional staffing and regular customer traffic without having to operate an entire store independently.

And for the broader Cinco Ranch and Katy community, it provides another opportunity for dollars spent locally to reach the small businesses and entrepreneurs behind the merchandise on the shelves.

With vendor spaces being filled and the doors scheduled to open Sept. 5, residents who remember shopping the former Painted Tree location will soon get their first look at what its next chapter has become.
