Tavola West Families: Your Complete New Caney ISD Back-to-School Guide for 2026-2027
For families in Tavola West, the final weeks of summer will bring more than shopping for school supplies and resetting bedtime routines. New Caney Independent School District is preparing to welcome most students back to campus on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, with registration requirements, updated bell schedules and several district policies that parents will need to review before the first day.
Students attending Infinity Early College High School, also known as IECHS, will follow a different calendar and return to campus on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026.
Families looking for information about a particular elementary, middle or high school should visit the Welcome page under the “Our School” tab on that campus’s website. Those pages may include campus-specific arrival procedures, events, supply information and other back-to-school details.
Returning New Caney ISD Students Face an Aug. 5 Deadline
Returning student registration for the 2026-2027 school year opened July 13. Parents or guardians of currently enrolled students must complete three requirements before 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5:
- Complete Returning Student Online Verification, or RSOV
- Submit proof of residency
- Make sure all required immunizations are complete
The deadline matters. Students who have not completed online verification, provided proof of residency and received all required immunizations by 5 p.m. Aug. 5 will be unenrolled. Their families will then have to complete the new-student enrollment process before the students can return to school.
Additional instructions are available through the district’s Returning Student Registration page.
New Student Registration and Centralized Enrollment
New Student Online Registration also opened July 13.
After completing the online application, families were directed to bring the required documents to New Student Centralized Registration at Porter High School from July 21 through July 23, 2026.
Families enrolling after centralized registration must take their documents directly to the student’s home campus. A list of required records and enrollment instructions is available through New Caney ISD’s Enrollment and Registration page.
Parents who are unsure which school serves their address can use the district’s attendance zone resources before beginning the process.

SMART Tag Policy: No Badge, No Afternoon Ride
School transportation will require a little extra attention this year.
New Caney ISD uses the SMART tag student identification system to support safer and more efficient bus transportation. The system also gives parents a way to follow their child’s school bus ride through the SMART tag app.
Every student will receive a new SMART tag ID badge for the 2026-2027 school year at no cost. Returning students should continue using their old badges until the new ones are distributed.
Under the district’s “No Badge, No Ride” policy, students who arrive at a bus stop without a SMART tag may still board the bus in the morning. However, they will not be permitted to board the bus for the afternoon trip home without a badge.
A student who loses a badge may ride to school in the morning but must purchase a replacement at school before afternoon transportation. Replacement badges cost $2 for one card or $5 for three cards, and payment must be received before a replacement is issued.
Parents can download the SMART tag app to monitor their child’s bus ride in real time. Families should also use the district’s Find My Bus Stop tool and review the Transportation page for details about routes, the parent app and the badge policy.
For younger students in particular, placing the badge with the child’s backpack or morning essentials may help prevent an unexpected transportation problem at dismissal.
Free Breakfast Available to Every Student
New Caney ISD will provide free breakfast to all students during the 2026-2027 school year.
Families can use SchoolCafe to check breakfast and lunch menus, review account balances, make payments and receive notifications when funds are running low. Meal pricing and additional nutrition information are available through the district’s Child Nutrition page.
Applications for free or reduced-price lunch are also available. Families who may qualify are encouraged to apply even though breakfast will be free for all students, since eligibility may affect the cost of lunch and access to other benefits.
ParentSquare Will Deliver Emergency and District Messages
New Caney ISD uses ParentSquare as its mass notification system.
School closures, emergency notices, campus updates and direct messages may be sent through text messages, phone calls, email and ParentSquare app notifications. The free ParentSquare app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Families in Tavola West should review their contact information before classes begin and make sure the phone numbers and email addresses associated with their student’s account are current. Enabling app notifications can also help parents receive time-sensitive school information promptly.
Personal Communication Devices Must Stay Stored
New Caney ISD students will not be permitted to carry personal communication devices on their person during the instructional day.
Devices must be turned off or placed on silent and stored inside backpacks throughout the school day. Under the district’s definition, a personal wireless communication device may include:
- Cell phones
- Text-messaging devices
- Personal laptops
- Tablets
- Other personal devices capable of sending or receiving data
The rule applies to devices that are not provided by the school for instructional purposes. Cell phones and other covered devices may not be kept in pockets or otherwise stored on a student’s person.
Families should review the complete personal communication device policy in the New Caney ISD Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. Talking about the rule at home before the first day may help students understand when devices must be put away and how parents should contact them during school hours.
Volunteer Applications Require Annual Approval
Parents, guardians and community members planning to volunteer in New Caney ISD schools must submit a new application each year.
The 2026-2027 NCISD volunteer application opened Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Both new and returning volunteers must complete the application and pass a criminal history and background check.
The district has simplified part of the approval process this year. Applicants who complete the required steps no longer need to schedule an appointment at the central office. Approved volunteers will receive an email after the criminal history review is completed.
Campus staff will automatically be able to see approved volunteers in the Raptor Volunteer Management System. Volunteers will still be expected to follow campus sign-in procedures whenever they arrive to serve.
The district’s Volunteer Handbook explains the application process, credentialing procedures, guidelines and expectations. Additional information is available through the NCISD Volunteer page.
What Families Should Do Before Aug. 6
With several requirements tied to enrollment and transportation, the most useful step for families is to work through the district’s checklist early rather than waiting until the night before school.
Returning families should verify registration, residency and immunization records before the Aug. 5 deadline. New families should finish enrollment and deliver documents to their assigned campus if they missed centralized registration. Bus riders should locate their previous SMART tag badges, confirm routes and download the tracking app. Parents should also review bell schedules, ParentSquare settings, lunch accounts, device expectations and school supply lists.
Those preparations may feel routine, but together they can help make the first morning smoother for students, parents, teachers and campus staff across New Caney ISD.
