Swenke Elementary Students in Cypress Continue Tradition of Compassion Through Kindness for Kids in Crisis Initiative

West Houston / Cypress  /  West Houston / Cypress
June 04 2026

In moments of fear, uncertainty, and trauma, comfort can come in unexpected forms. Sometimes, it's a reassuring word from a first responder. Other times, it's a simple stuffed animal offered at exactly the right moment.

That is the heart behind the 2026 Kindness for Kids in Crisis initiative, which recently brought together students, educators, community volunteers, and law enforcement in a shared effort to support children experiencing some of life's most difficult situations.

This year, Kathleen Ellis and the Swenke Elementary Student Council donated dozens of brand-new stuffed animals to Constable Terry Allbritton's Harris County Constable Precinct 5 Victims Assistance Unit. The stuffed animals will be carried in patrol vehicles throughout the Precinct 5 service area and provided to children who have been exposed to traumatic events.

For deputies responding to emergencies, the small gifts often become an important tool for helping children feel safe during overwhelming circumstances.

"Our Precinct 5 deputies carry these stuffed animals in their patrol cars and give them to children who have been exposed to traumatic events, offering comfort during difficult moments," Precinct 5 shared in announcing the donation.

A Tradition Rooted in Community Service

For Swenke Elementary students, this annual project has become much more than a collection drive.

Over the years, Student Council members have supported a variety of local causes, but the stuffed animal initiative has remained especially meaningful because of its direct impact on children in the community.

The effort also carries a deeper connection to a legacy of compassion that continues to inspire students today.

More than a decade ago, local student Julia Marie Briggs set out to collect stuffed animals for first responders to give to children facing crisis situations. Julia's life was tragically cut short in 2009 after a battle with Mediastinal Lymphoma, but her commitment to helping others continues through the work of the Burning Flower Foundation and community partners who have carried her vision forward.

Each year, Swenke Elementary students learn about the importance of helping children they may never meet—children who are experiencing some of the hardest days of their lives.

That lesson continues to resonate.

Why Stuffed Animals Matter

While a stuffed animal may seem like a small gesture, law enforcement officers and victim assistance teams know the impact can be significant.

Children who witness accidents, family emergencies, crimes, or other traumatic events often find comfort in having something familiar and soft to hold. The simple act of receiving a teddy bear can help ease anxiety, provide a sense of security, and offer emotional support while first responders do their work.

For deputies serving communities across western Harris County, those stuffed animals become one more way to care for residents beyond the immediate emergency.

The program spotlights a powerful reminder that public safety is about more than responding to calls—it's also about supporting people through difficult moments.

Students Making a Difference Close to Home

The 2026 donation demonstrates how young people can create meaningful change in their own communities.

By collecting and donating dozens of new stuffed animals, Swenke Elementary Student Council members have helped ensure that local deputies will have comforting resources available when children need them most.

Their efforts reflect the values many Cypress-area families work to instill in the next generation: kindness, empathy, service, and compassion for others.

While the stuffed animals may eventually travel throughout Harris County Precinct 5's patrol area, the impact begins right here in the Cypress community—with students choosing to make a difference one act of kindness at a time.

What Happens Next

The donated stuffed animals will be distributed among Harris County Constable Precinct 5 patrol units and the Victims Assistance Unit, where they will be available for deputies responding to incidents involving children.

As the annual initiative continues, Swenke Elementary students are once again proving that even small acts of generosity can leave a lasting impact.

For the children who receive these stuffed animals during a difficult moment, they will represent more than a toy. They will represent a community that cares.

Residents interested in learning more about the legacy that inspired this initiative can visit the Burning Flower Foundation, which continues to honor Julia Briggs' commitment to helping others.
