Spring ISD Hosts 2023 Girls' Empowerment and Leadership Youth Summit
Over 300 female students gathered at Dekaney High School on Saturday for the 5th Annual Spring ISD Girls’ Empowerment and Leadership Summit.
Spring ISD campuses were well represented, with students also joining from Conroe, Klein and Cy-Fair ISDs. While the event was advertised to girls in grades 6-12, a number of 4th and 5th grade students were also able to participate.
The morning began with registration, T-shirt and swag giveaways, and a hot breakfast, then students gathered in the Dekaney Star Theater for an inspirational opening message from Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa.
“You as girls in our district are our future leaders,” Hinojosa said. “And today we will focus on you and we have lots of people that are here to support you.”
The superintendent led a lively roll call, and pumped up the crowd with music and dancing. When Hinojosa asked who would like to come on stage and show off some dance moves, it was answered by an enthusiastic group of young ladies who led her through a few popular steps.
Almost 50 noteworthy and inspiring women were invited to come out and share their knowledge and expertise with the girls in attendance. Topics ranged from how to navigate a career in corporate America to how to be successful in the entertainment industry.
“Spring ISD strives to equip all of its future leaders with the tools and skills necessary for a successful future and for the present day,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Dr. Lorena Zertuche, who helped oversee preparations for the event. “While the summit kicked off with lots of fun and joviality, it was most definitely a meeting with a purpose.”
Presenters shared their words of wisdom and guidance and also answered questions and provided feedback to the inquiring young students. Girls had their choice of sessions focused on a variety of themes, with a special emphasis on the following:
- College and Career Readiness
- Leadership Development
- Social and Emotional Support
They were also treated to a special lesson on dining etiquette. They were then able to put those skills to use during a luncheon that capped off the event.
District administrators and presenters all said they hoped students left feeling energized and encouraged – having discovered new friends, renewed inspiration, and new knowledge and skills to help them along their path of success and living confidently.
